I called John Wnuk and he came out to look at the work. (He was not wearing a mask when he arrived, said "I don't wear a mask, it fogs my glasses." - as he's looking at me with a mask on and my glasses.) He took all my information down, looked at the house and said he'd email me a quote the next day. I gave him four days and called to follow up. He did not return the call so I tried again a day later. He answered and said he would drop off the quote the next day. He never showed up. I called again and left a message thinking we somehow missed him. We tried his number, office number and third number on his card and left messages. Not one of the calls was returned. Given the great reviews, we assumed something could be wrong so I had my husband call one more time, all three numbers. Still no response at all. I don't have a problem with someone not wanting my job or being too busy for it, but I have a real problem with lies and lack of communication. If you don't want the job, just say so rather than telling me what you think I want to hear with no intention of following through. I gave him a 2 because I know their work is quality from seeing it, otherwise I would have given them a 1.
Description of Work: We got two local recommendations for this company and had watched them work on one of the jobs. The site was orderly and the quality of the work seemed good; my neighbor was pleased.

The siding is OK---except that he put large aluminum pieces over the porch railings, instead of wood, which are ugly and I have never seen done on another house (he has done many in this area). He did not ask about this at the time, but claims that is the only way it could be done (also, not true). Other than having to pay a whole knew roof (not with WNUK) and not knowing what and when he knew it, we are asking that he re-do the soffitts as that will not be covered by another roofer. We would not hire him again, as he does not tell the truth and has hidden from us twice when we have gone to his office, not returned phone calls and not shown up for follow up appts on this, except once----saying he would only cover half of the soffit problem----and we have not heard from him since even about that ! 8/2/13 We have heard nothing from WNUK or from Angies' on our complaint.
Description of Work: Wnuck Construction was hired to put new siding and a completely new roof (tearing off the older two roofs and bringing the supports up to code). However, he used a product for the roof (CertainTeed Organic 3-tab shingles) that had begun to have several complaints from all over the country in the late 1990's. We did not know this and he may not have either. In early 2010, I found on the Internet that a class action suit was filed against CertainTeed in 2005 and settled in early 2010. We had begun to complain about a shingles in 2009, which were starting to crumble very noticeably. He said he knew nothing about the problem and did replace a few of the worse shingles with fiberglass. In mid-2010, we complained some more, as our whole roof was in terrible shape, and he said he had no responsibility for it. He said nothing about a class action suit. He couldn't even find the paperwork that said what kind of roof we had and how much we paid. We had the amount receipt, but not the type of shingles. Mr. Wnuk finally admitted CertainTeed was our roof brand and that he "just found out" about the suit (although he knew of other clients who had already filed for the class action "rebate"). In 2012, after a very long process, we got a big $750 from the Certainteed suit--- but we were going to have to pay for a whole new roof! That part is Certainteed's fault; Mr. Wnuk knew nothing about the complaints at that time in 2001. However, in the process, my husband, also, discovered that WNUK had not put any insulation holes in the soffitt covering---just slapped the new covers over the new wood. He denied this, but other roofing contractors that we have looked at it agreed with us and were very surprised as soffitt air holes are a mandatory thing---and new roofers would charge extra for that now. We have tried and tried to reach him by going to his office and phoning him, but he does not come to the door or reply to phone messages and his e-mail address does not work. Finally, after leaving a phone message for him that I was going to report this to Angie's list and other agencies, he called and said he would come over to discuss the problem the following Saturday (in January 2013). He did not show up and it took more than 6 weeks of more calls that he made another appt. with us. His defense on the soffit problem is that there are "invisable holes", which I asked him to show us when he came over. Of course, he did not even bring up the invisable holes nonsense when he came to our house. In the end he said he would give us an estimate, but he would only pay for half of the work. He has not given us that estimate even---and that was over two months ago. We do feel we should not even have to pay half of this clear mistake on the soffits. So, no, we would not use him again and advise others not to use him either

Communication with the crew was extremely difficult since none of the workers spoke any English. All communication had to be done thru the office and it took about between four hours and one day before the manager returned calls. He was the only contact person who spoke English. They did not put any Tyvek or other moisture barrier around the house before the siding went up. This is the first item that should be done before putting the siding up. I've seen other houses by WNUK that had the Tyvek wrap. When the job was completed, they left many things undone. I had to threaten not to pay the last portion I owed unless they fixed everything, which was finally fixed. I had to follow the individual around to ensure the things were done completely. The final design looked very good. Their corner molding was larger than conventional ones, which makes the siding look nicer. Their gutters are larger than the conventional ones.
Description of Work: They sided our entire house with vinyl siding, replaced all the gutters, and re-roofed part of the roof.

Wnuk Construction tried to take as many short cuts on the tear off as possible. I literally needed to stay on the job the entire time to make sure the job was completed as specified. John Wnuk (Owner) and I would have conversations and then the non-English speaking work crew would show up and do things differently. The site was left a mess with black finger prints and smears all over the siding. We are still finding waste and debris from the work in the yard. Wnuk Construction was called back several time to repair the soffit that keeps moving and opening up. 4 years after the job we developed a leak in our roof. Even though we were still covered by the 5-yr warranty on workmanship, I didn't want Wnuk back on my property working on my roof. I had another Roofing company fix the leak.

COMMUNICATION WAS DIFFICULT WITH WNUK, AS MANY OF THE WORKERS DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH. WE WAITED A LONG TIME FOR OUR WINDOWS TO ARRIVE, AND WHEN THEY DID, THE REPRESENTATIVE DID NOT CORRECTLY MEASURE THE AVAILABLE WALL SPACE FOR THE BEDROOM WINDOW AND, AS A RESULT, ORDERED A WINDOW THAT WAS TOO BIG. THEY ALSO ORDERED THE WRONG WINDOWS FOR THE KITCHEN. THIS RESULTED IN ANOTHER 6 WEEK DELAY IN THE INSTALLATION. WHEN THEY GOT THERE TO INSTALL THE WINDOWS, THEY RUSHED THROUGH THE JOB AND WE HAD TO CALL THEM TO COME BACK AND FINISH UP SOME OF THE SMALLER DETAILS. IN THE END, THEY DID NOT EVEN COMPLETE THE EXTERIOR WORK; FOR EXAMPLE, THEY LEFT ONE WINDOW WITH INSULATION EXPOSED BECAUSE THEY FIGURED WE WERE GETTING THE HOUSE SIDED IN SPRING SO WHY WASTE THE TIME MAKING IT PERFECT NOW. WE FINALLY GAVE UP FIGHTING WITH THEM ABOUT IT AND DECIDED NOT TO USE THEM FOR THE BIG SIDING JOB.
Description of Work: INSTALLED WINDOWS IN KITCHEN AND BEDROOM. REMOVED EXISTING WINDOWS, SEALED OLD WINDOW SPACE, AND CUT OPENINGS FOR NEW WINDOWS IN NEW LOCATION.

WORK CREW WAS TIMELY, POLITE AND HARD WORKING. OFFICE STAFF IS COURTEOUS AND HELPFUL. THE ROOF LOOKS TERRIFIC AND THE WHOLE JOB WAS DONE QUICKLY AND WELL. THEY HAD TO USE THE YARD NEXT DOOR AND WERE SUPER NICE ABOUT THAT AND CLEANED THEIR YARD REALLY WELL. THEY DO OTHER WORK TOO, NOT JUST ROOFS, AND I WOULD USE THEM AGAIN.
Description of Work: TEAR OFF ROOF JOB. REMOVED 3 LAYERS OF ASPHALT SHINGLES, ORIGINAL WOOD SHINGLES. PUT DOWN ALL NEW PLYWOOD AND THEN NEW ASPHALT SHINGLES. ALSO, NEW GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS. THIS IS A BIG ROOF.
