About us

We are a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility in the St. Louis metro-east city of Belleville, IL. We have been in business since 1984. We specialize mostly in vehicle maintenance and services. We operate a National-award-winning preventive maintenance club that will be 25 years old in 2011. We are different from other repair shops because we take the time to educate them and provide choices. We (Stock's Underhood Specialists) provide today's busy commuters with dependable and safe transportation for 250,000+ miles and beyond while saving them $2500 a year. We have done this by designing a detailed service that blends the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer, with the recommendations from industry and our experience in managing the oldest preventive maintenance club for over 25 years. July Car Tip: We do a lot of possible purchase inspections. You know that B4U-BUY that used car? We have a key tip we would like to share. Make sure you get 2 sets of keys and fobs with that used car deal. Some of the computer chip keys go for nearly $300! Now take only 1 set to the car at a time and use the key to lock and unlock the door (many locks don’t mechanically work), start the engine and then lock and unlock the door with the key fob. Go get the other set and repeat the above process. Why not both sets together? Because many computers will recognize a key with a security chip nearby and allow a blank key to start the vehicle. You don’t want to get home to find out one set of keys is a fake.

They check out the whole car and then if you have your oil changed there any part that is affected by the oil is guaranteed for the life of the car. What they do is guarantee the car. They went through it with a fine tooth comb and he said it was absolutely pristine. They are terrific. AAA recommends them and I took advantage of a freebie. They were free. If they found anything wrong they would take care of it. I would recommend them to others.

We have the Preventive Maintenance program with Stock's, and it has been a great way to make sure that every part of the car is checked out in detail on a regular basis. In addition, with every P.M. inspection, the lights, tires, and basic safety equipment are inspected, along with the oil, lube, and filter. Working with Paul Stock means that I have a better understanding of my car and what its problems are or may be in the future, because he is a wonderful educator, and always very professional. We don't put many miles on our car, but we're almost due for the next P.M. inspection, so we'll be taking it in again soon, even though we're not noticing any problems of operation.

He was fantastic!! We live in the St. Louis area, so we found his name on Angie's list.  We had read reviews that stated he was very thorough ----and he was!  He provided a detailed inspection sheet, went over potential problems with the specific model and year of the car, and spent extra time educating us about purchasing used cars.  I truly wished we lived closer because we would use Mr. Stock as our mechanic.

Although Paul Stock was very courteous and took time to explain his troubleshooting process in the end the car was NOT fixed nor could he tell us the cause of the problem.  According to Paul they conducted every test on the engine and it met all specifications including cam shaft clearances, compression, timing, including isolating the rods, and VVT actuator & solenoid.  He did replace the timing chain tensioner but that did not resolve the problem.  He had the car for over a week and charged us over $1800 for his labor in conducting these checks.  Although the engine passed all checks he believed the noise indicated a problem and would not give a professional opinion on the seriousness of the noise. Five Stars for being extremely nice but one star for technical expertise.  Very disappointed in his failure to fix the car.  Like going to a doctor and paying a lot of money for testing just to be told that they don't know why you're sick.  Would you return to that doctor?  DO NOT RECOMMEND.

I dropped off our '99 Volvo V70 the night before my appointment
and spoke with the owner, Paul Stock, about checking the thermostat
and repairing the knob that had fallen off.  He called back mid-morning
the next day to report his findings and explain the additional suggested
repairs, which I approved.  When we picked up the car that evening,
I noted the itemized bill included a picture of the transmission dipstick
showing the condition of the fluid prior to the flushing & refill.
I began taking our '91 Toyota Corolla to Stock's several years ago
because he was the only AAA certified repair service near our home.
He always takes the time to explain the work so I could understand
what needs to be done and why.
As my V70 got older and dealer service and repairs became
increasingly expensive (not to mention the 48 mile round trip involved),
I began taking it to Stock's too.  He saved me $1000 over the dealer's
estimate on one repair alone.
I always learn more about cars when speaking to Paul and am always
amazed by his depth of knowledge and experience.  If he doesn't know
something, he finds out.  And he's not afraid to admit he was mistaken.
He doesn't mind giving advice or explaining things about our new
'12 Volvo S60 either.  I'm certain when the dealer maintenance agreement
ends that I'll be taking that car to him as well.

This service was for the fourth of four Preventive Maintenance inspections for this year. In each inspection, an oil, lube, and filter is done, along with inspection of lights, tires, and basic safety equipment -- plus an inspection of one of four specified areas of the car overall. This visit's preventive maintenance check focused on the brakes with tire rotation. A detailed inspection sheet showing depth of remaining tire tread and thickness of brake pads was provided along with overall recommendations. And Stock's always vacuums and wipes down the interior of the car before I pick it up, so it's even more of a pleasure to drive away in it!

About a day after getting the vehicle home, my wife informed me that it was STILL leaking. Paul stands behind his work which is a plus so I called him to let him know it was still leaking. He asked me to bring it in at my convenience. After a few hours, I received a call from Paul saying that a clamp that had not been put back was the culprit. Went back to pick the vehicle up again at no charge. The next day my wife said the car was still leaking. I called Paul again to bring vehicle in. He explained that there was another leak at the rear valve cover gasket. He said that it is very hard at first to determine the source of multiple leaks if they are traveling a similar path. It made sense, so I asked for a quote to replace the valve cover gasket. Paul sent the quote a few days later. It was around 600 for the job so I decided to do it myself. It took me about 6 hours and 100 bucks for parts and supplies.

After putting the valve cover gasket on, the next day I notice a quarter-sized puddle underneath the car. I thought it was the power steering supply line that the shop had replaced so I called Paul. He told me to bring it in so he could look at it. Paul thoroughly cleaned the engine area and test drove it multiple times to ensure any residual fluid was removed at no additional charge. Great guy. Great technician.

I’ve been dealing with Stock’s for over 5 years, and I’ve been very happy with the service. They’ve gone out of their way to make sure I’m a satisfied customer! He sends reminder cards for oil changes, etc. The price is well worth the value. One night, I even went over to him around 8pm since my truck didn’t sound like it normally did, and he diagnosed it right there, and then fixed it the next day.

I’ve had auto service done by him. He was able to fix my air conditioning in my car, which is very old. The parts were hard to find, and he was able to find them.

We’ve used their services for all of our cars, along with our children’s cars, and we continue to use Stock’s. They have a maintenance program where we take our cars in on about a quarterly basis.  I feel like I’ve gotten very good service!

My disclaimer:  This was not my first visit to Stock's.  I have no reason to go anywhere else because they have earned my trust and loyalty.  They do excellent work, explain things thoroughly, give detailed reports of what they did, and are up to date with the today's vehicles.

On arriving for my appointment, they were immediately ready for me and the technician had already reviewed my work order and knew what I was there for.  After looking at the undercarriage he brought me into the garage area and pointed out some scratches and reassured me that there was no significant damage to the structure of the car.  The trunk floor pan was bent but they were able to straighten it and applied a sealant to prevent water leakage.  (By the way, it is a common practice for them to want you to "see" things they are talking about on your car.  I didn't understand this at first but now realize this can be very helpful.  When the car was under warranty and they discovered a leak, they showed me exactly where it was, told me it was covered under warranty and provided me the written documentation to take to the car dealer to make sure the correct problem was fixed before the warranty expired.)

When the work was completed, the inside of the car was vacuumed while Paul went over the invoice with me.  He also went over the estimates I had requested for some services that had been recommended at my last visit.  The estimates include what it includes, why that service is needed,  and how it will help with the car's performance.  I also received a copy of the check list used on this visit.  The checklist includes fluid levels, safety equipment (such as head and rear lights, turn signals,  wipers, etc.), tire pressures and wear, and about 15 items checked as part of the engine analysis.  If there are specific numbers associated with these checks, they are documented and all items are graded either Good, Marginal, or Critical.

I love the Preventive Maintenance Program.  I can guarantee without it, I would have been somewhere with a dead battery and it probably wouldn't have happened in front of their business.  Paul and John have saved me a lot of anxiety and money when it involves my car and I highly recommend them!

This was the first basic service for this car that wasn't performed by the dealer. The services to be performed were discussed and thoroughly explained before work was begun, and the work performed and recommendations were discussed and explained in detail after the work was completed. New tires were recommended, and Paul showed me the markings on the current tires and explained exactly what they represented so that I would understand what a quote on new tires really meant. We discussed a recommended frequency of service for the car, given the type of driving we do, and we set up a basic preventive maintenance plan for the car. The service on the vehicle is excellent, and the customer service is superb. We have had work done there on another car in the past, and I know that working with Paul is like having a partner who is invested in keeping our car running safely and well.
