I am extremely happy with Karla's design. At our first meeting Karla asked me what plants and colors I like and then went to work and produced an initial drawing of her ideas. Later, she emailed pictures of the plants she would be using. She and her crew worked very hard and the results are beautiful. Now my home has a fresh new look that I love. Her crew even moved and neatly stacked the old flagstone and pavers that I wanted to keep.

On the lower level of our addition, we have a decorative landscaping pit that was built using railroad ties.  The pit is below grade and there is a sliding glass door into the lower level.  There are places where the railroad ties have started losing integrity and in a heavy rain, was getting water in basement as the water was not draining from the pit.
They excavated the existing pit area, installed three "water reservoirs" below final grade, and appropriate drainage pipe, then refilled the pit area with pea gravel.  They installed several  large rocks to help stabilize the railroad ties, cleaned and trimmed the existing plants that were on the layers moving up the pit walls, transplanted some hostas from our back yard, and also set some pavers that were left over from a previous job as a step out from a second above grade sliding door next to the pit area.
We were very impressed with our contact (Martha Scatterday).   As we are preparing to list our house this spring, we wanted to address the problem in an attractive way but without spending an arm and a leg.  She listened to what we were trying to do and came up with a cost-effective solution for us.  We did have some settling of the pea gravel with the first heavier rains.  Thornapple came out and installed more gravel.  They wanted to make sure that we were satisfied.
We would clearly use them again if a need arose.

James Konrad was very easy to communicate with as we worked out the details of the job and during the execution of the job. He did a great job of executing the landscape beds from an existing landscape plan, while also making adjustments to accommodate a tree planted in a different position from that landscape plan.  He also designed a new bed that wasn't on the original plan and has a great eye for that.  The workers did a very nice job of leaving the yard neat and tidy after each of the three days that the job took, and took great care to work around several existing shrubs and perennials.  James communicated with me every step of the way and sent out emails to let me know when they would be there - unlike some other contractors when you don't know when/whether they will show up.  James went above and beyond by giving advice about some plants that probably weren't sited in the best location, and suggesting changes to the landscape plan, including plant choices.  I am delighted at the transformation in our yard and I highly recommended James Konrad and Thornapple for design services and installation!

I chose Thornapple after obtaining quotes from four companies.  Out of the four, only Thornapple and one other was willing to give me a copy of the proposal drawing.  Having the drawing allowed plenty of time for reflection.  I chose Thornapple because it was really easy to work with Senior Landscape Architect, James Konrad.  Out of the four, he was the only one who listened, asked questions and who really captured what my wife and I wanted in a patio.  His architectural design was beautiful, affordable and fit the house and its surroundings perfectly.  My wife and I both love it.

Very professional and pleasant to work with. We would definitely use them again -- and probably will next season to put in a patio.

They arrived promptly on the appointed day and set to work.  The old shrubbery was removed and the new shrubs were planted.  They even moved some perennials that were there and replanted them for me.  They mulched the beds. When they finished with all the work they cleaned everything very well.  They were efficient and worked diligently to get everything done.

Thornapple was very nice to work with.  They made changes and brought out a couple of replacements during the planting because Karla wasn't happy with the originals.  They took a large rock we had by our mail box to prevent cars from hitting it, and replaced it when I noticed our rock was gone.  Now it is April 2014, after one of the coldest and snowiest winters in 30 years, and the plants are looking very good.  The ground cover is starting to grow, and the rest of the plants are starting to bud out.  Everything is guaranteed for a year, so if they didn't survive the winter, the company will replace them.  So far the landscape looks great.  Karla has checked several times to see how things are going.  I will definitely use them again for any landscape work we need in the future.

Our landscape job was a big project. It was a three year event, do the the size and money spend on getting our landscape done the way we wanted it. We had just finished building our home 2008 and needed to landscape the yard. Being that we had a corner lot, it was a huge job  to do the landscape. After interviewing five landscape companies, we chose Thornapple, due to the expert horticulturist they had on staff.  The frist phase went very well and we were completely satified with the work that the company did. On the second phase, things got a little more difficult. The install of the  patio was no problem, but when it came to having the box for the grill to be install, it had to be send back due to the measurement being a little off. We had input on the measurement and part of the mistake was ours, but the fact to the matter was when your spending, what we spend. The company should have been a little more professional in handling the situation. This took more time in getting the job done, and we assisted the company with getting a few things done ourselves. Even though it wasn,t much and the company said, that it was not necessary we did it anyway.  Now when the job was completed and we did not like the color of the mortar used on the grill, they came back immediately and redid the grill. Which was outstanding service in following thru with our displeasure of that part of the job. When it came time to pay the final install of the bill, we ask for them to deduct about  $200.00 off the bill, for the work we did ourselves. Much to our surprise they did not, due to the fact that they told us, that they could have done what we did.Now I'm talking of a job that we paid $30,000.00 + for.  Needless to say they were not hired to do phase three of our landscape for a measly $200.00.

They are perfect. The are easy to work with and do a good job. They are very responsive. They double check things weeks after the job was been completed.

They did a great job.  We have had several compliments on the work they did.

Sue Myroup was very helpful.  A couple of plants, however, did not survive or have not flourished as originally described (even with care and maintenance).

We discussed our wishes with Sue and she helped us design a nice landscaping plan utilizing many of the plants we already had.  Our landscaping looks very nice and charming and not like a corporate office park which was our biggest fear.  Once the plan was set we were given an approx start date which could change due to weather and it wound up getting delayed about one week.  Once the plantings were done, we were given instructions on how to care for them and Sue came for a return visit a few weeks later to check on our progress.  One bush did not take and it was replaced with no question/hassle.

Thornapple has provided services to me since 1999, and I have been completely pleased.  They are honest and educate me about the plants, impact of weather, new pests, and new plants that the magazines are recommending but haven't worked out so well for other customers.  I think I save money and frustration with their help.  They are very knowledgeable and keep me from making mistakes while helping me achieve the look that I want.  I do not have a cookie cutter yard.

Kristina from Thornapple met me to discuss the replacement of my decaying bluestone. We discussed why the existing bluestone might be decaying and ways to solve the problem to prevent a similar problem with the new stone. I received an estimate in a timely manner. I left several different messages for Kristina with questions regarding the project and each message was returned within 24 hours with all questions answered to my satisfaction. I then decided to expand the job parameters and was given a new quote over the phone with a faxed proposal soon after. Installation of the new stone went well. Thornapple arrived on time and the workers were very nice. I made several requests regarding installation procedures and all were honored in a friendly professional manner. Upon completion the job site was left clean. I had requested that some of the old bluestone be left for me for salvage use. When I realized that the old stone was too far gone to be of any use, Thornapple was kind enough to come back and haul it away. The end product looks great and I am very satisfied. Since it takes the test of time for any laid stone to show problems, I will report back next year if any issues develop.
