Starting last spring, we were having intermittent trouble with our furnace. I would turn start to turn on but could not ignite. It would cycle through, shut down, then try again. Sometimes it would fire up fine, sometimes not. We called in the furnace guy used at my husband's office. He looked at it for a while, said he couldn't see anything wrong, charged us $185, and left. Immediately the furnace refused to fire up. We called him, but never heard back from him. I noticed, however, when he was tinkering around that it worked whenever he messed with a plug and switch on the front of the furnace, so by doing that we made it through the rest of the cold weather and didn't have to worry about it in the summer.
When it came back on in the fall, it was working fine for about a month. Then the same problem started again. This time we called the furnace guy my sister uses. He tinkered for a while, replicated the problem, but told us he wasn't sure what was wrong. He unplugged the plug we had been wiggling, replugged it in, told me he hoped that would fix the problem, then said to call him if the problem continued. He, at least, didn't charge us.
Finally, I came to Angie's List for a recommendation. I chose Tempco because it specifically says on their website that they are a Rheem distributor. Jason came and looked at the furnace for a long time. He noticed that when he put his sensor down next to the plug on the front of the furnace, the furnace would fire up consistently. He determined that some of the soldering around the plug must have loosened over time so it wasn't making a good, consistent connection anymore. He gave us a temporary fix while the part was being ordered, and about a week later, he came back and installed the new part. It works great now.
Not only was Jason competent, he was friendly and personable. I really appreciate everything he did.
