Upon the signing of the contract, we paid Dan $400.00. We were told he had a crew, and his references also referred to his "very professional crew". He started work the following week; showing up mid mornings, alone, and leaving before we got home from work. He said he had decided to paint our house himself. Each morning when he arrived, he would set up his equipment and then immediately leave to (a) go get paint, one gallon at a time (b) get some "pop" or (3) ask for a check and leave to, we assumed, go to the bank. Every night, my husband would look at the work done for the day, and each day we would find shoddy workmanship (missed areas, paint slopped over on trim, paint dripped on our brand new deck, etc.) When he was shown the missed spots and dripped paint, he would promise to fix it, and would; however he continued working in the same manner, missing more places, skipping a second coat behind bushes, and basically dripping paint everywhere he went. When he finished with the main part of the house, and started scraping, sanding and painting the trim, we stopped him as the work was worse than ever. He would begin painting an area and stop halfway through, with no apparent plan of attack. Two doors were painted while they were closed, painting only about a third of each door and leaving huge unpainted areas in the center where he was going to "come back and finish". The trim paint was now being dripped on the freshly painted siding. We finally just stopped him from painting anything further, and paid him for 3/4 of the total contract price, which was more than the value of the total work that he did. We are now getting estimates from companies to paint the trim..
Description of Work: Exterior cedar staining, entire house plus trim; one color on the house plus white trim. Dan stopped by our home and offered an estimate for the exterior painting of our home. We weren't interested at the time. A few months later, in April, 2010 he stopped by again, and once again offered a free estimate, and calling us repeatedly until we told him he could give us an estimate. After walking the exterior of the house, he gave us a resonable estimate. We asked for and received a list of references. All four of his referrals gave us "glowing" comments, all saying they were planning to use him again very soon. We should have listened to our gut feelings.
