I'd requested an early morning appointment and the techs Jose and Mike showed up promptly at 7:45am. They got to work right away opening up the furnace, cleaning the burner and flame sensor. Unlike the previous HVAC business I dealt with, Jose told me the heat exchanger on my unit was still warrantied for another five years. I should note I had an electrician working in my basement at the same time and Jose and Mike worked around them without complaint.
Jose asked if I was interested in signing up for their seasonal service agreement, which covers both a furnace clean and check in fall/winter and an A/C clean and check in the spring/summer. The cost of the service is $198 and includes a 10% discount on parts and labor for any needed repairs.
During the cleaning of the furnace, it was discovered that the hot surface ignitor (this is an electromechanical component that replaced the old pilot lights in furnaces years ago) was drawing too much resistance and had a lot of carbon buildup, a sign the part was failing. Jose showed me the ignitor with the buildup clearly visible. If it fails outright, the furnace will not light and after the previous winter we had just gone through, I didn't want to take a chance. I agreed to have it replaced. I found out afterward that the price markup on these parts is enormous...with an aftermarket ignitor that costs $25-30 being sold back to the customer for $275. And that $275 was after the 10% discount I was getting. In fairness, I opted for an and quot;upgradedand quot; ignitor that I was told is more heavy duty and has a lifespan typically twice as long as the standard model. But even the standard model was only $50 less. Could I have installed the ignitor myself? Maybe. But unlike repairs to the plumbing or a car, I'm not willing to take a chance on trying to repair something that could have lethal consequences to myself and my family if I get it wrong. In the end, I was happy to have the repair done, even if the price was a little steep.
All in all, I was happy with the service I received from Amber Heating and Cooling. Their staff, from the phone operators to the techs were top notch. I'll have them back in the spring to tune up the A/C unit.
My husband woke up at 5:30am to feed our newborn and found standing water in half of our downstairs carpets and laundry/utility room. I called Amber's emergency number, left a message with the message service and the tech on duty called us back about 20 minutes later. He instructed my husband to turn off the water but the water heater would have to wait til business hours because he was not a water heater tech. Thus, at 9am, Julie from Amber called to see what the problem was and what course of action might be taken. When I explained our new parent status (literally had gotten home from the hospital 1 day prior), the lack of hot water and flooded second floor, she quickly mobilized to have a tech out to our house immediately.
Paul arrived shortly after and was wonderful. Paul had been to our house before for the routine checks but he really worked quickly and was a great help. By the end of the day, the old heater (50 gal tank) had been removed, the new one was ordered, delivered and installed, and Paul had checked it and re-checked it several times to make sure it was running correctly. Unfortunately, water heaters are not cheap and we ended up paying $2650 for the new heater and installation but I am confident in the new one and the service it took to get it in and running.
Julie, Paul and the whole Amber team exemplify customer service and I would recommend them to everyone.
