My Koo Koo clock was from my mother and was made in the 1960's. Mr. Hirst's website speaks of his passion for repairing Koo Koo clocks and his address was not far from mine. After numerous attempts to speak on the phone, I finally got time from him on the phone to talk about the clock. He was pleasant and told me he could take a look at it and we arranged a date to drop it off at his home. He did not tell me what he charged and I did not ask. I assumed he would look at it first and then discuss with me the cost of repairs prior to working on it. I dropped the clock off November 4, 2012, at his home. I got a call the last week of November from Mr. Hirst stating the clock was finished and that it just needed a new 'bello' as it did not have one. He also stated that he went ahead and cleaned the gears and had my clock running for him for 1 week now and it was keeping time nicely. He did not mention price again. I asked him about the parts he ordered that I would have to pay for and asked how much they cost. He said it was about $25.00 in parts. I asked if I could have a receipt of the parts ordered when I came to pick the clock up. He said sure. On December 2, 2012, I drive over to pick the clock up from his home. He gives me the clock and I ask how much to write the check for. He says, "$190.00." I tried to hide my shock and politely asked again if he had a receipt for me showing how much the part cost. He pulled out an order form that showed a koo koo clock bello on it for around $25.00 and stated he needed to keep that form as there were other parts on it that had been ordered for another customer's clock. I wanted to say something about why didn't he tell me he would charge so much for labor when the part was so cheap or why doesn't he advertise his labor fee on his website but I didn't. I simply wrote the check for $190.00 and left. The clock is working now but I had no idea it would be so expensive to fix. Had I known, I would've shopped around further to get other quotes from other clock repair shops instead of paying $190.00 to Mr. Hirst. His intentions may have been good but he really should discuss steep labor fees up front or advertise this on his clock repair website. He should return business calls sooner than 1 week also. He offered for me to bring the clock back to him if I have any other problems but I am not sure if that means he would look at for free or if he just wants more of my money. I don't think I will be back there even though he did fix my clock.
