We had a 48 x 30 pole building with a 12 foot lean-to built by Steel Structures America starting early August 2014 and finally finished mid November. We were told it would take a few weeks to build not 3 ½ months. They would leave the job for weeks to work somewhere else. There were so many building problems from their poor quality of construction and mistakes. It seemed the builders were not good craftsmen and didn?t understand quality construction. I spend time emailing the owner about all the mistakes and I needed to yell and scream to get him to come to the site to see the builders quality of work.
I meet with the owner, their building quality control person and engineer to discuss the mistakes and quality of work.
I am confident that the builders would have tried to cover up the mistakes instead of fixing them properly. We didn?t trust their work so we needed to constantly check to see if other mistakes were being made. Each time other professionals (electrician, drywallers, cement people, excavators) came, they would find mistakes that needed to be fixed.
The following list is only a few of their mistakes or problems we found: needed to replace steel on two sides; one side, the tin was cut too short and the other side had holes drilled though the tin in the wrong place (they wanted to patch this and I insisted on replacing the tin); sections of the support beams were cut improperly and too short; tin on all sides of the roof was cut short of the eves than covered up with flashing; vent placed cooked; cut branch off my 25 year old tree hedge; needed to come back to place screws in the tin that were missing; many support boards were cut short leaving space between boards;
didn?t order enough steel costing nearly 3 weeks delay because they left the job; we had problems placing ceiling drywall
because of uneven ceiling rafters and we had to added additional rafters to the ceiling because they had the rafters
placed 2 feet from the sides walls leaving no place to nail the drywall.
It?s hard to believe that such a large company could have such poor craftsmanship and do such poor quality work. Their work and service was the poorest quality I have ever seen.
