Toward the end of the visit, they told me my heat exchanger was cracked and needed to be replaced. Told some horror stories about carbon monoxide leaks (which, if you to have a CO leak it is a serious issue) and how I needed to replace right away. Initially told me we needed a whole new furnace for $4200. After I really stated that price was an issue, they said they could do just the heat exchanger for $2400. And, if I signed a year-long contract, for more "servicing" the price would drop to $1900.
The fact they said they had the part right on hand and tried selling me subscription services lowered the cost, etc., were red-flags for "get a 2nd opinion" in my mind. Told them we would need time to think about it and get a 2nd opinion. When we said that, they told us they would have to turn off our furnace. They didn't just power it down and turn the gas off either, but they turned off some switches deep within the furnace so I couldn't turn it back on without getting a professional HVAC person.
Before they turned off the furnace they didn't to a single carbon monoxide test. They didn't do anything to check there was actually a carbon monoxide leak. They simply pointed to a smudge on postage-stamp sized screen on a camera and told me that was the problem.
Called out a different company first thing the next morning and they were out within a few hours (and only charged $70 and included some other work free with that). Explained the problem to them. They took the entire furnace apart, inspected the heat exchanger top to bottom (actually looking at it, not just poking a camera deep in a hole). Not a single crack was found anywhere, and a carbon monoxide test show no leaks at all.
On top of that, my neighbor said (in passing) that they actually found a crack in his heat exchanger the first time they serviced his furnace as well. It seems odd that we both had the exact same problem, and it something incredibly hard for a lay-person to notice or diagnose.
Heat exchanger cracks are very serious and a real problem if they happen, however I get the impression this company preys on "finding" these cracks frequently. Either way, get a 2nd opinion if they tell you you need an expensive repair. You may; or you may be like me where you don't need to blow an extra $2400 for a problem that doesn't exist.
