Mark and his crew did an excellent job restoring a dining table and a computer desk; both now look brand new! It cost us $275 which was what he quoted for the job plus he provided pickup and delivery; I am going to have him polish out some scratches from a coffee table as soon as he can scheduled it.

I trusted Hogey's Antique and Restoration with my most cherished possession: the vintage barber chair my dad used for 50 years of barbering... my expectations were exceeded. The barber chair is a vintage chair from about the 1930s.
For at least the last 12 years or so, the Pairdar barber chair has been stuck in the high position. I have had SO many individuals look at it in an attempt to figure out the issue... including my dad, my other brothers, colleagues with mechanical backgrounds. Everyone was stumped and the assumption was that the brake was broken. Throughout the years, I have asked hair stylists, and beauty/barber supply companies who fixes vintage barber chairs. I have stopped in or called many barbers to ask for advice on how to fix the chair or who to call. I've done online searches, used online message boards, emailed strangers across the country, studied yellow pages for local business as well as places in major cities. I discovered the TV show and quot;American Restorationand quot; on the history channel and even contacted Rick's Restorations, but learned they do entire restorations and not just repairs. In my mind, I thought I had only two options available to me: live with the chair as it is, or crate up the chair and ship it off to Houston, or Atlanta or some other major city.
The TV show and quot;American Restorationand quot; gave me the idea to start searching for antique restoration. Around Dec. 26, 2012 I found and quot;Hogey's Antique Restorationand quot; in Nampa, ID (30 minutes from me). In the first phone call, the owner (Mark Kettering, third generation of the family-owned business) understood the issue and explained the problem. Said to me and quot;it only needs to be serviced.and quot; Two days later, picked up the chair to take it to his shop, and the chair was fixed and returned two weeks later.
The original estimate was $150 (which I felt was ridiculously low, especially given the pick up and deliver service to another city) and the final price was $210. I believe that Mark greatly undervalued his services for this project... especially when I think of what I am charged for other repairs/services around my home. Mark called in a timely fashion before showing up to my home each time, when the chair was fixed and he knew the final total on the bill. The issue was exactly what Mark first described. My dad's barber chair is now working just as I remember. It's ready to last another 60 years!
Do: Write up the issue, your expectations, and the options you want for estimates and service. I actually recommend doing this for nearly every service... when I haven't done so and only rely on the service to write up the work to be done, I have often been disappointed. (In this case, Mark and I were in synch and the written description was probably unnecessary, however I also want him to search for arm rests to match the original look of the chair so I included a photo from the 1950s.)
