Austin was professional and on time. He identified the source of the leak and even found a new one, which he promptly repaired. He was clean, organized, and courteous, and made sure I was satisfied with the work. I will definitely keep Master Plumbing on my go-to list of favorite repair companies.

Nice folks and friendly. I had them out go diagnose a warning switch activation on septic system since our guy who does our small subdivision septic water treatment was out of town. They diagnosed a bad float switch and asked if we could replace the stop float too. Warning sign #1, but I was heading out of town and didn’t want to deal with it so I said yes. Then they said well you have no power to your on float and so it still doesn’t work. So now we are in for nearly 800 dollars and haven’t even scratched the surface of the problem. They didn’t even check the float for power. Rookie mistake. Could have have been a control board, etc. I assumed they had checked the basics loose wire, power, etc. Master plumbing asked if I wanted excavation to come out and diagnose the wire problem. I’m sure digging to find a short in a buried wire would have been another 1000 so I came back early from vacation and just pulled some new wire. Cost was 50 bucks and a couple hours. Buyer beware. Don’t sign anything till they sign something that says they have diagnosed the problem correctly and your not paying for changing out parts that don’t need to be changed. Probably why I just do most things myself these days if I can.

The work done was fair. We had a problem with the charges. There was no senior discount on the bill and when we asked about it the manager said she would take off 2% but when we called to pay the bill over the phone she added on the 2% then discounted the 2% and gave us the full price to pay. My husband spoke to her about this and she finally corrected the bill.

Summary: Don't use Master Rooter and shop around for a better price.

Our story: We had used Master Rooter (also dba Master Excavator) to replace a septic system, so I had experience with and was comfortable with and trusted the company.  The key word there is TRUST.

I called Master Rooter early and they were available later in the morning same day, which was important since we were w/o hot water.  The service tech showed up and provided me an estimate.  Based on my previous dealings with Master Rooter, I trusted them, expected a fair deal and I ACCEPTED the estimate.  The work was done (including driving to pick up the water heaters) in approximately 6.5 hours.  The service tech was competent, he cleaned up his work area, and the work appears to be well done.

The next day, I was talking with a friend and told him about the job and price.  He suggested that I was significantly overcharged.  That prompted me to due some price checks, and here's what I found.  The retail price on the waters heaters was ~$750 (I needed two).  Total labor time was ~6.5 hours.  Total other parts were ~$100 (a pan, a few copper joints, PVC piping, and an expansion tank). For arguments sake, let's say Master Rooters charges me 30% markup for the tanks and charges $100 an hour for labor.  That should have been something like:

- Heaters: 2 x $750 x 1.33 = $1995
- Parts:      $100
- Labor:     $650
- Total:       $2745

 I was charged $3751   <-- I was over charged by ~$1000.

I called and talked with Master Rooter, and was told that they are willing to do nothing. The Service Manager was reasonable and sympathetic, but the General Manager specifically suggested that I "agreed to the price" and he didn't feel any adjustments were needed.  I explained to them that I thought that was unfair, we discussed pricing, and that I felt like my trust had been betrayed.  They didn't dispute my pricing figures, but either way they didn't care.  They have their money.  The trust is gone and I will never use them again.

Oh, worth noting, I have since checked with another service provider and they would have replaced the tanks (same brand and model) for $2100.  And, one plumbing company has an ad on Angie's List now offering water heater replacement for $936 each -- this company is a reputable firms with an "A" rating on Angie's List and 83 reviews.  I have no affiliation with either firm.

The lessons for me are (a) shame on me for not shopping (b) shop rather than trust and (c) don't use Master Rooter.

"[member name removed], Again I am truly sorry that we have failed to not only meet your expectations but to exceed your expectations. As I mentioned on the phone to you, we do appreciate you taking the time to express your dissatisfaction with our service. This is the best way for our or any company to improve themselves. It is rare that we are not able to send customers away happy and this is truly a misfortune for both of us. I have looked into your service issue again. After review I can clearly see that your pricing and service needs were discussed up front prior to any work being completed. I feel that you received a timely, quality install by a licensed Plumber. I believe that we agree on these details thus far. As for the bottom line... I can't speak for what you get from other places. I would never recommend you use any business that will quote you pricing over the phone. All plumbing jobs & customers are unique and deserve special attention. Always have a licensed Plumber look and give you firsthand information. With that fact in place I do not feel that you are comparing "apples" to "apples" on pricing. Your service was not as “cut & dry” as you made it sound. Keep in mind we are the only company that looked at your job prior to it being completed, had another company physically looked the job over prior you would have been given different figures from them. We are not the most expensive nor are we the least expensive, but we are your best choice hands down for overall service in this Valley. What you get from us that no other company provides is the "entire" package. Our experienced office staff answers our phones 24/7 - we do not use an answering service. Our professional, licensed Plumbers have: all required training and more, they have years of experience, are subject to; pre-employment drug/alcohol testing, random drug/alcohol testing, extensive background check, must have and maintain clean driving record, be bondable, must be clean-cut and follow a strict Code of Conduct. We only hire the best – Honest & Ethical - no exceptions. We provide all technicians with a clearly marked company truck, clean uniforms and proper tools for all jobs. The bottom line is that I would not hesitate to send any of our technicians to my own grandmother's home - for quality or price of job; I know she would be getting the best value available. Again I'm disappointed and sorry that you do not feel like you received your money’s worth on this service. I will work with our management team on ways to better relay information to customers hoping this may help with any future issues. I hope that you may reconsider and give us another chance to provide you with quality service and be the company you deserve and trust. Sincerely Lori"

called for someone to come and pump septic system as it was full again, they were just here in Oct and pumped it, so she sent a tech out in some little truck and charged over $100. to dig in a wrong spot as it was already dug up and then they sent the pump truck out and pumped it out for over $200 again

As I explained to [Member Name Removed] on the phone, we feel that we provided the service that was requested per her "recorded" phone call and that was proper for the situation. [Member Name Removed] declined to listen to the recording of her call and declined further service. Sincerely Master Rooter Management"

Our technician was very professional and informative. He completed an inspection after the clean-out and explained how the tank and drain field worked. He also explained the need for active bacteria and how to maintain the system for proper operations.

Another service provider working in our crawl space discovered this leak, which had been going on for some time (days or weeks), and flooded the crawl space from end to end. I called Master Rooter, who has done service for us before, and they came immediately. They fixed the problem right away.

First, when I called around 7pm Friday, a person answered! She took my information and contacted the technician (Don). He called to confirm the problem and came within 30 minutes. He replaced the broken pipe and the fittings quickly and professionally. Don also helped with a second problem where we couldn't get the shower head off to replace it. He was able to remove it for us (it was epoxied on there by previous owners!)
Anyway, Master Rooter was quick, professional, and solved the problem that was an emergency after hours issue.

We had a pipe burst under the house in the crawl space and it was leaking pretty badly. It was in the furthest corner of house of course. We called Master Rooter and they arrived about 45 minutes later. Brian Hughes showed up and you could tell he was a professional and knew what to do. He had the pipe replaced in less than an hour and our water back on. Brian made a very stressful situation bearable and I would highly recommend Master Rooter to anyone in need of plumbing. The fear of possible cost was soon alleviated as it was worth every penny of the $400 dollars to have the piece of mind that my family will have water in the morning.

We had a home inspection scheduled for Friday morning at 11am. The previous night we found a small, slow leak in our crawl space which started at some point in the last week. I called Master Rooter, they came out first thing, fixed the leak, and helped dry the wood prior to the home inspection. I HIGHLY recommend this company to do your plumbing!!

Craig did a great job, and was thorough and professional.
I have no idea what price such services should cost, as we had never had this done before. The $3,200 was just for the plumbing costs. And it was a shock to see the amount. We were reimbursed for less than a quarter of that amount by the insurance company. We did not have time to have other estimates done as the flooding was unpredictable as we had no idea how long it had been there, nor how fast it was accumulating. So, we felt we needed to be addressed quickly. Perhaps we could have had estimates done, but we didn't do that. Maybe we should get the United Water insurance policy for this type of thing??? I'll be looking into the latter.

Response from MASTER ROOTER PLUMBING
"As much as we would like to take credit for this work well done, I'm not finding you in our records nor have we had a Craig working for us in the last year or more. We would love to earn your business and would be happy to provide you with a free estimate for any future needs you may have. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. My water heater began to leak in the middle of the night, creating a mess in our laundry room. I looked in the phone book and noticed Master Rooter Plumbing's very professional advertisement and that it stated 24/7 service. I called and was surprised to be greeted by a very professional, empathetic woman who worked directly for the company She was very knowledgeable and was able to calm me down a bit. She assured me that she would send a technician to my home immediately. 20 minutes later there was a knock on the door, a plumber was standing in the doorway ready to shake my hand. He parked his van in plain sight so I could see immediately who he was, he was uniformed, had boot covers so that he wouldn't track any dirt into my home and was very friendly and professional. He came into my home laid out a mat on the floor so that he again would not put his tools, etc.. on my hardwood, and began to diagnose the issue. After fully explaining and showing me what the issue was, we agreed that we would need to replace the old water heater. We sat down at the kitchen table and together looked in his price book. He explained to me each option I have and cost associated with them. We agreed on a specific heater and he happened to have on his van! He documented the total price on his invoice and requested my signature of approval before he began the work. He had my water heater replaced within a matter of a couple of hours, he took the old water heater and disposed of it for no extra cost. He also told me if I experienced any problems to please call in and he will come back out right away. He explained the warranty of the water heater as well as the service warranty that Master Rooter Plumbing provides. He also asked me if I'd like him to do a free residential home inspection while he was there. I gladly accepted so he looked at all of the plumbing pipes, fixtures, etc. in my home and gave me a detailed report of any current/potential issues that I have and also which items were in great condition. The report also listed the price it would be to repair each item. Needless to say I was very impressed. When he was leaving he gave me a card that included a coupon for any future service I may need and also noted that Master Rooter Plumbing donates a percentage of every invoice towards 4 great local charities. I can feel even better about my purchase! Thank you Master Rooter Plumbing, from the moment the lady answered my call until the moment the technician left was a fantastic experience. They were very cost effective and I will use them for all of my Plumbing needs as well as tell everyone I know about my experience!
