"Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to post a review. We appreciate your business. Thanks Lori"
Our story: We had used Master Rooter (also dba Master Excavator) to replace a septic system, so I had experience with and was comfortable with and trusted the company. The key word there is TRUST.
I called Master Rooter early and they were available later in the morning same day, which was important since we were w/o hot water. The service tech showed up and provided me an estimate. Based on my previous dealings with Master Rooter, I trusted them, expected a fair deal and I ACCEPTED the estimate. The work was done (including driving to pick up the water heaters) in approximately 6.5 hours. The service tech was competent, he cleaned up his work area, and the work appears to be well done.
The next day, I was talking with a friend and told him about the job and price. He suggested that I was significantly overcharged. That prompted me to due some price checks, and here's what I found. The retail price on the waters heaters was ~$750 (I needed two). Total labor time was ~6.5 hours. Total other parts were ~$100 (a pan, a few copper joints, PVC piping, and an expansion tank). For arguments sake, let's say Master Rooters charges me 30% markup for the tanks and charges $100 an hour for labor. That should have been something like:
- Heaters: 2 x $750 x 1.33 = $1995
- Parts: $100
- Labor: $650
- Total: $2745
I was charged $3751 <-- I was over charged by ~$1000.
I called and talked with Master Rooter, and was told that they are willing to do nothing. The Service Manager was reasonable and sympathetic, but the General Manager specifically suggested that I "agreed to the price" and he didn't feel any adjustments were needed. I explained to them that I thought that was unfair, we discussed pricing, and that I felt like my trust had been betrayed. They didn't dispute my pricing figures, but either way they didn't care. They have their money. The trust is gone and I will never use them again.
Oh, worth noting, I have since checked with another service provider and they would have replaced the tanks (same brand and model) for $2100. And, one plumbing company has an ad on Angie's List now offering water heater replacement for $936 each -- this company is a reputable firms with an "A" rating on Angie's List and 83 reviews. I have no affiliation with either firm.
The lessons for me are (a) shame on me for not shopping (b) shop rather than trust and (c) don't use Master Rooter.
"[member name removed], Again I am truly sorry that we have failed to not only meet your expectations but to exceed your expectations. As I mentioned on the phone to you, we do appreciate you taking the time to express your dissatisfaction with our service. This is the best way for our or any company to improve themselves. It is rare that we are not able to send customers away happy and this is truly a misfortune for both of us. I have looked into your service issue again. After review I can clearly see that your pricing and service needs were discussed up front prior to any work being completed. I feel that you received a timely, quality install by a licensed Plumber. I believe that we agree on these details thus far. As for the bottom line... I can't speak for what you get from other places. I would never recommend you use any business that will quote you pricing over the phone. All plumbing jobs & customers are unique and deserve special attention. Always have a licensed Plumber look and give you firsthand information. With that fact in place I do not feel that you are comparing "apples" to "apples" on pricing. Your service was not as “cut & dry” as you made it sound. Keep in mind we are the only company that looked at your job prior to it being completed, had another company physically looked the job over prior you would have been given different figures from them. We are not the most expensive nor are we the least expensive, but we are your best choice hands down for overall service in this Valley. What you get from us that no other company provides is the "entire" package. Our experienced office staff answers our phones 24/7 - we do not use an answering service. Our professional, licensed Plumbers have: all required training and more, they have years of experience, are subject to; pre-employment drug/alcohol testing, random drug/alcohol testing, extensive background check, must have and maintain clean driving record, be bondable, must be clean-cut and follow a strict Code of Conduct. We only hire the best – Honest & Ethical - no exceptions. We provide all technicians with a clearly marked company truck, clean uniforms and proper tools for all jobs. The bottom line is that I would not hesitate to send any of our technicians to my own grandmother's home - for quality or price of job; I know she would be getting the best value available. Again I'm disappointed and sorry that you do not feel like you received your money’s worth on this service. I will work with our management team on ways to better relay information to customers hoping this may help with any future issues. I hope that you may reconsider and give us another chance to provide you with quality service and be the company you deserve and trust. Sincerely Lori"
