"Thank you [Member Name Removed]!! We appreciate you as our customer."
I knew they were going to and quot;cut out the ceilingand quot; where the heat pump went. I did not know they would remove the ceiling from the entire room.
I had received several estimates for the job and thought they all had included and quot;protecting furniture, carpet, and belongings with plastic.and quot; Border Sheet Metal did not put down any plastic. Nor did they ask me, and quot;Would you like to move cover up your stuff or move it?and quot; They cut away drywall, cut away ceilings, and sawed through wood without protecting any of my things. When I into the basement after the first day, I had a melt down. Apparently, the person who bids the job is supposed to make be on-site prior to start of construction (to make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen) but he was unable to be there.
Within three days of installation, our home was freezing cold. We called several times and the staff kept telling us, and quot; You are just used to wood heat, a heat-pump is different because it circulates room temperature air.and quot; Nobody came to check the system. We then received an electric bill for approximately $250. I called Border and demanded that someone come check our system. Four men in suits arrived. The system had clicked into and quot;emergency heatand quot; because the refrigerant pressure was too high. They apologized, removed some of the refrigerant, and our heat pump began to work.
We also discovered they had quoted 9 ducts on the upper level and 6 in the basement. Border installed only 8 of the ducts. They repeatedly stated they had done 9 and it took us quite a while before someone would come to our home so we could prove we had only 8 ducts installed. They did put in another duct.
I found a separate heating contractor to maintain our system after that, but the problems continued.
The summer of 2008, we had to replace the valve for the refrigerant. (I believe it is because they had put in too much and the valve broke due to pressure.) Our warranty covered the part, but we paid $258 in labor to have it replaced.
Our heat-pump was hit by a car in 2011 and when it was replaced, the replacing company told us the first pump had not been installed correctly. The pad was too small and the heat-pump was not raised off the ground enough to keep ice from forming on the heat pump. (Our pump had shut down the winter of 2010 and went into and quot;emergency powerand quot; mode. We didn't understand how important the pump being off the ground was.)
Fast forward to now, 2013. During our kitchen remodel we discover that the and quot;ventand quot; for the kitchen was not connected to the transfuser. The air was simply blowing around under the cabinet. No wonder our kitchen was always cold. Border told me today on the phone that this is and quot;standard.and quot; No, it's not. Other companies don't work that way. In heating, it's important to seal the heated or cooled air in the duct work until it is released into the room.
Border also said they and quot;could notand quot; have hooked the duct to the transfer. This is not true at all. The room beneath our kitchen has a hot water heater in it and no ceiling. It would have been easy for them to connect it properly.
Remember the room they removed the ceiling in? The duct work is so uneven and slopes in such a way that we have been unable to come up with an idea to replace the ceiling.
My experience with Border Sheet Metal is that it's been a never ending nightmare and the worst financial mistake we have ever made.
