Joe arrived, we discussed the house size etc., and he printed off a number of quotes for different size units ranging up to $9400 including heat pumps. I wasn't thrilled, and said we would talk about it. Went back to work.
Talked to one of my workmates, and he said if I wanted to wait until after and quot;high seasonand quot; to try to get a lower cost, maybe I could use plumbers putty to temporarily plug the leak in the pan to get me through until fall. After work, went to Home Depot for putty, sandpaper, small wire brush etc. to see if I could find/plug the leak. Opened up the panel when I got home to find that the water was dripping off the coils, not from the pan. After researching on the Internet, discovered I could buy a $5 can of coil cleaning spray and clean the coils - which I did. No more water around the furnace.
Waited over a week for Joe to call me back, and when I explained the sequence of events to him he backpedaled, made excuses, told me that due to liability they would have had to remove the coils to clean them if they did it - anything except an apology and/or acceptance that maybe they did anything wrong. Not impressed.
Still had one fall furnace service left on the contract, so on 10/25, another technician arrived to perform the service. Talked to him about what had happened, and in addition to the furnace service he also looked at the coils and drain line. The drain from the coil pan was a convoluted mishmash of different fittings that turned a couple of angles, and had a pretty small opening. Even though I didn't ask him to work on it, he insisted on trying to remove the fitting and replace it with another that would be more wide-open. The fittings were very tight, probably rusted, and in using two large pipe wrenches to loosen the fittings I believe he cracked my pan. I now had water around the bottom of the furnace again when the A/C ran.
I ended up having to have my A/C replaced this fall, but had another company do it.
ALWAYS get a second opinion before making a major purchase, and educate yourself on what you need vs. what is available!
To his credit, the owner did contact me and try to and quot;explainand quot; that if my system goes bad I could end up with monoxide poisoning. Um, well . . . .
The house is a single level with long runs from the plenum to the back bedrooms. The rooms farthest from the furnace were at issue in not receiving enough warm air in the wintertime. We had a single thermostat that controlled the entire house.
We contracted with Ashlee for an annual tune up of the HVAC system, at the same time we asked them to advise us why some rooms were hot, some cold.Ashlee did the maintenance, mapped the existing system, measured air flows, determined there were no leaks in the current system.
Ashlee advised that a single thermostat governing the entire house was insufficient to balance heating/cooling loads throughout the house. They recommended adding a second zone to control the back bedrooms. After reviewing their design and cost estimate I asked an engineering friend to review and advise me. He confirmed that Ashlee's recommendation was good and the cost was reasonable.
We had the technician/job supervisor on the project from start to finish. Ashlee arrived on time, completed the work in a 1 1/2 days. Final price was as quoted.
Ashlee gets bonus points becauseI suggested a change order to add an additional register to one of the rooms, but upon inspection and measurement Ashlee determined this wouldn't be necessary, so they saved me $240 that I had expected to spend.
- The estimate was very detailed and did not change due to unpredictable circumstances.
- The Ashley rep predicted the work would take 4 days; it took 5 + and the price did not go up.
- The installers were prompt, polite, professional, and did their best to limit disruption.
- At final inspection, the rep gave me 2 air filters at no cost and also did not charge me for all new vent covers, which I asked for in a fit of and quot;I want everything new and shinyand quot;!
