The repair blended well - he seemed very knowledgeable, and we had a great consultation with him. Other flooring "pros" we had quote us for the work were going to use boards that were 1/4" thinner than our existing wood floor, which was unacceptable to us (apparently our flooring was discontinued and difficult to come by). He went the extra mile to find wood that would work that was the same width as our existing flooring.
Things started off great - he came right on time and got to work. We actually scheduled the work for a time when we would be away for a few days in order for the floor to have time to properly cure without any problems. However, when we returned from our trip, instead of finding gleaming, beautiful hardwoods, the finish was horribly uneven - dull in some areas and glossy in others, some boards were really rough (no Tom Cruise "Risky Business" sliding possible!), and he used filler in areas we had not anticipated (and forgot to fill several holes where he had to top nail some boards, which he actually did discuss with us!) Not to mention nearly all of our baseboards were scuffed by his sanding - and we specifically asked him how he would handle the trim! (He got a touch-up stain pen and half-heartedly went around and colored in where it was most noticeable. We re-did much of it ourselves after noticing that he was sometimes marking the lighter floor with the pen as he went around!)
We actually had him return several times over the next few WEEKS to try to get the floors as we anticipated, which was miserable because our kitchen/dining areas all have hardwood, so we essentially couldn't eat at home that entire time while the multiple attempts to refinish/cure were happening. It seemed as one area was fixed, another area was marred. Uneven sanding, drips of finish on the floor, finding holes that should have been filled.
I think we got them about 90-95% right when finally we gave up and stopped calling him to come back. There are still some areas of sloppy work, but we gave up! He did finally apologize and said he had never had a job go so poorly. (But would not discount the job for our trouble!!) To just be done with him, we did pay him in full, regretfully.
Oh, and he used some of our power tools without permission (I really hate it when people do that!), spilled some finish on our garage floor, and did not take any of the garbage - stuffed it all in our cans (which we never asked about beforehand, but totally did not anticipate having to deal with ourselves.)
