Wright Outdoor Solutions
About us
Formed from the merger of Wright Tree Care and Heard Gardens, Wright Outdoor Solutions has been caring for Central Iowa’s outdoor spaces since 1928. In 2013, we purchased local Iowa company The Growing Concern, which allowed us to take our services indoors as well. In 2019, we expanded our reach into the Omaha market through the acquisition of Omaha based company Verdure Elements, offering interior plantscaping, seasonal color and holiday design services. We are proud to be employee owned and offer the area’s most complete package of services for the care of your property. Our services include landscape design, installation and maintenance, complete tree care, lawn care, holiday lights and décor, interior plantscaping, plant rental, snow and ice management, land clearing, and mulch. Our crews are highly trained experts in their fields, and many of our employees are International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborists and members of the National Association of Landscape Professionals. We are also a member of the Accredited Snow Contractors Association. Additionally, Wright Outdoor Solutions was the first company in Iowa to become accredited by the Tree Care Industry Association.

"We are so glad to hear that! Our team of tree experts loves to help clients with all their tree care needs! Be sure to let us know if we can assist with anything else."
I should have worried when I saw the first draft of the design. It was a plain basic foundation planting and only included new shrubs. I asked for some changes, and the borders of the beds were changed and some of the perennials I had were included. It was still a fairly dull planting and really didn't meet the directive, but I liked the lines of the planting beds and knowing I could come up with a better planting plan, I accepted it.
The guys came, ripped things out and created the new lines. They were friendly, professional, and appeared to do a good job. The only problem is they took ALL of my topsoil, which I didn't discover until I went to plant the space. I had expected them to leave soil that was plantable. Instead I was left with subsoil clay through most of the area with some spots of previously amended soil. I contacted Wright about amending the soil.
The company was willing to amend the soil for a price; the amount of amendments listed in the bid were enough for about a quarter of the space. I asked them to adjust the price of the work they'd done. Their contention was that the soil was no worse than the farm fields around Iowa and fine for me. The representative even suggested I just use Milorganite and the soil would be fine.
Anyone who gardens knows that soil is the basis of the garden and without good soil, plants can't thrive. I was left with dense, shrink-swell clay that makes great pots but not good gardens. I have spent all summer fixing Wright's mistake and am just now getting ready to plant. I didn't amend the soil under the lawn, and it's turned into a crabgrass patch, as that's the only plant that can break through the clay pan. I'll have to have a lawn company rework that space next spring.
I've used Wright for tree work for many years because they were certified arborists. In fact, I've always recommended them for tree work in the past. I expected the same level of competency from their design/landscape specialists.
My contact person at Wright was a certified arborist, but I think that was the limit of her experience. She definitely could not be a gardener if she thought the soil was fine. At any rate, this experience has left me wondering whether anyone at Wright knows what they are doing. I no longer will be using them for tree work, and definitely not for any other landscape service.
We have used this company several times over the past many years. Although they are pricier than some, they are very good, dependable, and responsive.
A few months ago I had another tree service contracted to remove 3 trees in my yard. I gave them a good review here, even though they caused some damage to my neighbors house when the log they were putting on a truck swung through the side of his house. They made good on the damage . The tree we are talking about was one of those 3 and after removing the other 2, the foreman said this tree was too dangerous to climb to cut and since they could not get their truck in my back yard, they would come back to do this one after making arrangements with my neighbor to bring the truck on his property to reach the tree. After several months, I had not heard from then as to when they would be back. The tree came down all by itself during a storm, coming to rest on my neighbor's shed and covering the child's play set in his yard
When Wrights came, not being able to get a truck back here did not matter. Two men came out and were able to remove the tree from my yard, remove the branches my falling tree had damaged on a tree in his yard. It was a huge tree so it took them one long afternoon and the next morning, but they did a great job getting the tree cut and out of my yard. They were courteous and friendly and cleaned up all the debris from the job.
I had always heard that Wright's was one of the best tree services in the area, but that they were pricey. Their bid was less than
.any other I received. The estimate they gave was just under $1000. While doing the work, the supervisor came to the site to inform me that there were problems they could not see until part of the tree was removed and it would take 5 or 6 more hours work than allowed for in the estimate. They were here a lot longer than expected.
Because the work was scheduled and completed during their winter season, I received a 10% discount off my bill.
The two guys who came to do the work were a few hours later than planned, but it was because there had been snowfall that kept them at their previous job longer. I wish they would have kept me informed a little better so I didn't have to take as much time off work. They seemed a little confused when they first approached me because they thought they had one tree to trim instead of three. It would have made a better impression had he read the job writeup first. Anyway, they seemed to do a really good job. One guy did most of the cutting while the other was continually cleaning up after.
