We agreed to their bid in January but the work didn't begin until early April. We weren't in a huge hurry. The delay was partly due to weather early on, but once it started warming up, it was difficult get a response from them and when we did, it felt like we were mostly getting excuses.
One the first day they came back with a change order for replacing more sheathing than they anticipated. The work was necessary, as the chimney was in bad shape, but the cost seemed high to me. At this point the chimney was ripped apart, so we agreed to it.
Afterwards, there was a lot of debris and nails in the yard and in areas the sealant at joints and over the nails was poorly done. I noted this to the manager when he came to pick up the final payment. It took several days for them to get someone back out.
Several days later I noticed they had not provided the diverter strip on the roof above the chimney. I called them several times to have them come back and install it but got no response. After about two weeks, someone finally stopped by to install it, but there was never any contact before or after to say they were going to do it or that it was done. My wife just heard someone on the roof. When I went up to look at it, it was simply a piece of edge flashing tucked under the corner of a few shingles. I repaired this myself.
The next spring when I was cleaning out my gutters I found nails and debris in all of the gutters on the backside of my house.
There were nails rusting on top of the chimney, and the sealant on the backside of the chimney was also poorly done. And there was 2? hole in a lower roof, where it abutted the side of the chimney, that had been damaged while residing, which I also repaired myself.
Overall, the workmanship was adequate, but their clean up was bad. They were professional when you had face-to-face contact with them, but it was difficult to get a hold of them and once they had been paid it was impossible.
Update 7-2013 Still fixing their shoddy workmanship. Fascia and soffet trim falling off.
The company had done a good job on the siding and repainting part of of the remodel, but I feel they got in a hurry to finish and hired a subcontractor to finish the job. One of the siding crew had told me he would be doing the front porch.
So, in spite of an excellent siding and paint job, I am very dissatisfied with the poor workmanship of the deck. If the managers hadn't been in a hurry to get to the next job, I feel like the excellent siding crew would have done a better job than the subcontractor on the decking.
So take your chances if you choose to use them.
the owner, was easy to work with. He
came to our house, looked around, and gave us a competitive estimate for a new
roof, and we accepted his offer. He was
not pushy—a complaint for one of the other contractors, which we experienced
also.
Unfortunately, rain was scheduled for the same
day that the roofing was scheduled. This
happened two or three times. I’ve never seen so many missed weather forecasts! My wife and I were very anxious not to have
the work done if there were a chance of rain.
Not a few panicky e-mails were sent—and returned! Chris and his superintendent/scheduler,
Kelly, were most understanding and cooperative.
“No problem. This is Iowa,” Chris
said.
Another of our
concerns arose because when our neighbor had their roof done, the heavy shingle
truck badly cracked their driveway. We
didn’t want that to happen to us. Chris
was very cooperative. He made
arrangements for the dumpster to be put on sheets of plywood to help disperse
the weight, and he got the shingle company to bring only our load on the
delivery truck—instead of several other orders, which is the usual case. (When the shingles arrived, we still had to
sign a form saying that we would not hold the deliverer company responsible if
any damage was done. Fortunately, no
cracking occurred.)
In spite of a
sunny forecast, the installation day was very overcast—and there was even mist
for a few moments, which was pretty scary—but the work proceeded and was
completed by about 4:00pm.
A day or so later,
Kelly came by to do a walk-around with me.
A miniscule amount of the siding was exposed when some old caulk was
removed. Kelly arranged for a professional
painter to come by and do the touch-up.
