Our relationship with United Fleet is due to their fundraising programs with local sports teams. They typically provide free oil changes with these fundraisers. They offer an upgraded oil change level for a few dollars more but in my experience it has never been a "hard sell". Since oil change is free, use that savings for other miscellaneous maintenance items, such as tire rotations and oil change upgrade for fluid top offs and inspection. It's hard to grade the quality of an oil change but what I can grade are the intangibles that United Fleet has provide us during our last couple of visits.
During one visit during their inspection they advised the our brakes were just fine, in contrast to the dealership who stated they needed repair soon for X amount. They also detected an hint of oil somewhere on the engine, had a suspicion what it was and advised that it is something they'd keep an eye on it as we brought the car in for our remaining free oil changes. They did not think a repair was necessary at that time, so they didn't try to sell it. On our next oil change, advised brakes are still in good condition and again identified the oil leak, as well as, an safety issue with a lower control arm. These issues were identified even though United Fleet knew these were covered expenses under our car's warranty with the manufacturer. Not only did they identify the issues, they made sure we knew how to communicate issues to the dealership, as well as, placed their findings on the invoice. A few days later, the dealership fixed the valve cover gasket and lower control arms under warranty/recall programs with no push back at all.
So far we've had nothing but good experiences with Stan and the team at United Fleet in Urbandale. It appears one of the apparent goals of the community based fundraising free oil changes is to increase customer base by providing good service during these visits that people come back after they have used up their freebies. Based on the experience that we received so far and the number of various local business that we noticed utilize them for their fleet mechanical services, we're 99.9% percent certain that we'll stick with them when the warranty expires on our car soon.
