The upper floor of my house was completely carpeted... stairs, hallway, three bedrooms and two baths. We didn't want to replace all the carpeting, because the bedrooms responded well to cleaning, but the stairs, hall and baths (who carpets bathrooms?) never looked clean no matter how much I shampooed them. Wood flooring seemed the answer for the problem areas, so I started with Lumber Liquidators because they send me monthly catalogs. I was concerned about properly measuring the spaces myself, but they told me they work with expert private contractors for installation, and that all I had to do was choose my wood. Within a few days, Karl Kirchner, who owns Precision Countertops and Flooring, came to my house, and set about proving they told the truth: he is an expert. He studied the situation, measured the areas, then sat at my table figuring an invoice and a precise shopping list for me to take to Lumber Liquidators, measurements and prices coming out of his head so fast I couldn't follow his flying pen. He has been in the flooring business 25 years, though he looks about 35, and shared some of his knowledge with me as he wrote. He advised me that the stair steps I needed might be very expensive if I ordered them prefinished to match the flooring I had chosen, and that I could save a great deal by ordering unfinished oak stairs which he would stain to match. He also said I could save the $85 delivery charge and the $200 carpet removal charge if we could do that ourselves. That, to me, is a sign of integrity, to cost himself a fee to save his customer money. Karl set up an installation date and payment through the Home Service Store division of Lumber Liquidators, and when the wood was in, he took the stairs and a piece of the flooring for matching to his workshop to stain. No mess, no smell here for me, and are they ever gorgeous! Perfectly matched, and four coats of polyurethane, a lovely, silky finish. This job took four days, not counting the time Karl worked in his shop, and much of the work was done by Robert Kleiber, another expert by the look of his work, though he is modest and says he is still learning from Karl. He even removed the toilets instead of working around them, did all of his sawing outside, so no dust in the air or anywhere. We inspected the progress of the work every night after they left and were always delighted; workspace clean and orderly, the wood flooring lined up so perfectly at the wall that the quarterround finishing piece was almost superfluous. I guess that's why it's called Precision Countertops and Flooring. Both of these men are congenial and pleasant to have around, but if you want to chat with one of them, you'd better grab him on his way out, because they work hard every minute they're in the house. I would certainly hire this company again, whether by calling Precision Countertops and Flooring directly or insisting on Karl's company through the Home Service Store of Lumber Liquidators. We are so happy with this project; it is more beautiful than we could have imagined.
