This was an expensive landscaping project that was completed at the time of purchase on or home. It involved removing rotting landscape timbers and replacing with brick (about 6 feet high and 40 feet long). He employed about 3 workers and was on the job for about 2 weeks. In retrospect, he didn't get a building permit and it wasn't inspected. We also noted the rain gutter water from the roof was tied into the irrigation system in the wall. I wish we would have supervised him more closely. Owners just wanted out of the house, apparently they didn't sign a contract with this man. The wall stood for about 2 years and was washed out. Brick was thrown about 15-20 feet so you have an idea of the inferior work. It needed to be replaced. When I called him he agreed to inspect and see what the problem was. Took 3 phone calls to remind him we were waiting (this was April 2013). He came out to inspect the damage and we tentatively agreed to an arrangement on the repair - although the wall was washed out because of poor excavation and he had used the wrong material rock in the base foundation. He agreed to come out in June. Didn't appear. We called a third time. He said it would be July before his schedule was clear. In August, we still have a no show and there was extensive rain the previous 3 weeks with our backyard getting washed out. We hired Country Landscapes of North Liberty to do the job and I asked them to catalog construction errors and to take photographs. We have a copy of this and gave the materials to our lawyer. Paul essentially caused more damage than the existing wall as he didn't use a "geo grid" fabric material to stabilize the soil. He also built the wall over a tree root system and didn't fully remove 3 landscaping timbers. The gravel material was course and not fine, as recommended by most builders (course allows water to erode the foundation). He told our lawyer that he had no responsibility in the matter and that our roof received too much rain - it was a natural disaster. He also explained that he never agreed to come out any earlier than September (we originally contacted him in April).
