Needless to say this experience was the exact opposite of the first. Our agreed start date of June 8 came and went with only a text saying his guys weren't going to make it. We had the house ready for his crew to come in a tyvek and side. It was a gorgeous sunny day, the materials had been delivered early that morning but no workers arrived. I had talked to him in person on Monday the 6th and said "So we're starting Wednesday?" He hemmed and said, well the weather is suppose to be rainy so Wednesday/Thursday depending on the weather. Again, Wednesday, June 8, 2011 was a gorgeous sunny day in Urbandale, Iowa, and we got a text saying they couldn't make it.
Thursday the 9th it rained in the morning but was done by noon - no one showed.
Friday the 10th we reached out to Matt and he said his guys were on another job and he couldn't pull them off on Wednesday - he failed to mention this on Monday. Matt said on Friday, June 10, 2011, his crews don't work on the weekend but next week he'd have 5-6 guys over to get the job done in 2-3 days. He also said this happens with construction and having 2 contractors working on the job (1 for tear-off and one for siding) was a good way to save money but doesn't work out very well. As an "expert" in the home remodeling business not once did he express his concern with us having a family friend do the tear-off. If he had taken 5 minutes to educate us on the process we probably would have given the entire job to his company. Instead we had the house torn off entirely and were exposed to the elements, getting leaks in our house in two areas Thursday night, June 9.
We hired our family friend, his son and another friend to tyvek the house on Saturday, June 11 so our house wouldn't be completely exposed anymore.
Monday, June 12, 2011, the morning weather was great, no one showed. A big storm blew through around noon and it was sunny by 2pm and no one showed.
Tuesday, June 13, 2011, was a great day, no one showed.
Wednesday, 1 week after our scheduled start date, Matt texted in the morning and said his crew would be there by 10am. At noon, 3 workers showed up and started working. They stopped at 5pm.
Thursday, June 16, 2011, the same 3 workers came from noon to 4:30pm. Had to work another job in the morning.
Friday, June 17, 2011, they showed up at 9:45am - took an hour lunch break and were cleaned up, in their cars by 4:20pm. Of the 24 workable hours Wednesday through Friday, they worked 15. So much for the 5-6 workers banging the job out in 2-3 days.
Monday, June 20, 2011 - great weather day. No one showed.
Finally Tuesday-Thursday the 3-person crew showed up by 8am each day and finished the job mid-day on Thursday. 15 days after our scheduled start date.
Very disappointing experience. The lack of communication was awful, we never knew if/when a crew was going to show up.
