For this inspection, I think the most objective measurement of the quality of work is what they found vs what they missed.
During the inspection, they found the vehicle needed a new rear pinion seal, right inner tie rod end, and serpentine belt. None of that sounded too serious, and the dealer was willing to fix it before I purchased the vehicle, so I went ahead with the purchase.
For things they missed - I checked the fluid levels a few weeks after purchase, and found that when the engine is cold, the coolant tank was completely empty. When it was warm, it was 2-3 inches below the 'add coolant' line. It took about a 1.5 quarts of antifreeze to top it off. I used the rest of the gallon over the next 9 months to keep it topped off before putting that car away for the winter, so there was likely a leak.
When I started using the car again in the spring of 2014, I pointed out the possible coolant leak to Hubbell's when I brought it in for the first oil change. They did a pressure test, and found the heater core was leaking, why they said would be around $730 to repair. Looking back to the winter of 2013, the windshields had issues with fogging up, which is another indication that there was a heater core problem since when I bought the vehicle.
I realize they would likely not do a pressure test for a pre-sale inspection. Also, I probably should have been more careful about checking the levels before purchasing the vehicle. However, for the rate that I saw the tank leak, I couldn't believe that the coolant level would have been topped of when they saw it a few weeks before the tank was empty, so they either didn't look at it, or decided that it was ok for the coolant level to be low. A low coolant level should have been note-worthy, considering it could indicate a problem.
Overall, they caught stuff that most mechanics would, and missed stuff that most mechanics would, so I can't say that they demonstrated above-average quality in my case. However, I have a co-worker that has been going to Hubbell's for a while and swears by them, and I realize that things get missed once in a while, and would be willing to take the vehicle there for other work.
Otherwise, the level of customer service was good - They were always quick with answering questions on the phone, and the shuttle service was also good.

Response from Hubbell's Auto Repair Inc
"You have to remember that when the car came to us it was warmed up and had just been picked up from the dealer who likely topped off all the fluids, and as you stated it was a few weeks before you noticed low coolant and only when the car was cold. Heater core leaks cannot be seen during a visual inspection unless they are so bad that coolant is coming out of the A-C drain."

We had an issue with the timing belt on my wife's car, and had the car towed to Hubbell's, where it was quickly diagnosed. We were given the option to replace the engine with either a new engine or a used one. We wanted a second opinion, and had the car towed to a different shop, where it was repaired for about $1,500 less than the estimate we were given. I have talked with Hubbell's about this, and we agreed that we should have been provided the option to replace the timing belt at the time, with the understanding that there could have been more issues.
BTW - This is a year late because I have just joined Angie's List.

"So let me get this right, we checked out the car, found the problem, discussed the options with the customer, the customer decides to have the car towed to another shop, we only charge for our time to check it out and get a bad review for NOT doing work. Wow."

Auto Tires
My son blew a tire on his way to college. They got his vehicle in for service the same day and put new tires on (which we requested) within our budget and quality requirements. We have always been pleased with the service Hubbell's gives us.

I wouldn't take my vehicles anywhere else. They maintain all of our vehicles and we have been going there for ten years, since we moved to Marion. They are total professionals and do the job right the first time and always provide an estimate if you need one.

I used Hubbell's for all of our vehicle maintenance needs for about 10 years. They were always honest, reliable and competitively priced. I never got the feeling they were trying to milk me for unnecessary repairs or maintenance, they always got the job done on time, no surprises. The only reason I don't use them now is that my new vehicle is still under factory warranty, so I'm using the dealer's maintenance. Once it's out of warranty I'll switch back to Hubbell's. I recommend them to all my friends, and they have never come back to me with a bad report about their experience.

Auto Service, Auto Transmission Service
I went to Hubbell's because my transmission was acting up. I was overdue on a transmission fluid and filter replacement and Hubbell's was the best price that I was able to find. The Check Engine light was also coming on. I explained the issue throughly to the guy at the desk. The car would stay in 1st gear until the engine heated up, then the automatic transmission would basically act as normal. He said he would pass that along to the mechanic and have him look at the transmission. They called and told me that the Check Engine light was coming on because a part had worn out. I authorized a replacement. When I picked up the car, the guy at the desk said that the mechanic had taken it out for a test drive and that everything was fine. To my surprise, the transmission was not acting any differently and the Check Engine light came back on before I got back home. I called and told them that the transmission was acting the same...and that I doubted the mechanic had taken it for a drive as they would have surely noticed. He apologized and offered to take another look at it when I was available to take it back.
I never took it back, I dealt with it as-is for a month and sold it. I wouldn't take another vehicle to them again. As far as responsiveness to calls, professionalism, and price, they are decent...but their work is certainly suspect.

Response from Hubbell's Auto Repair Inc
"The engine computer had a code for the EGR system, we found the EGR modulator bad and replaced it, the customer wanted the transmission service. The old fluid was very dirty and the customer was told that the transmission might have more problems. When the SES light comes back on after a repair we check it out no charge, all parts are covered by a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. We would have checked the car no charge if the customer would have brought it back in."

I had never been to Hubbell's before, but I had heard good things. We were about to head out of town for the weekend and our van started making a strange noise. I called Hubbell's and asked if they had time to look at it that day. They said come on over. The mechanic listened under the hood with a stethoscope and determined the noise was coming from the alternator. He said he couldn't say for sure if it was about to fail, but if it was his family and they were heading out on a weekend trip, he'd replace it. This is how I want businesses to make recommendations to me: If they were in a similar situation, what would they do? In addition, the serp belt looked "glazed" and he recommended changing that as well. It was 10k miles past recommended replacement so I was not surprised by this and told him to go ahead. They called a couple hours later and said the alternator and belt were done but the charging system was still testing poorly and they felt I also needed a new battery. Although this was an unpleasant surprise, the battery was five years old so I didn't worry too much about replacing it as well. Although I never like spending money on cars, this was a very positive experience. The mechanic and staff were pleasant, competent, knowledgeable and well-spoken. And we made it to our weekend destination and back without problems! I will definitely go there again.
