I created a general scope of work and even had a drawing with dimensions for the work to ensure
he and I were on the same page when he bid out the work. Initially,
everything was going well and Mark was very responsive (showing up
around 9-10 am everyday) to stud up the walls. He mentioned he was out
of work, so he was more than happy to work on my project, but he
couldn't give me a quote on drywall until the stud work was nearly
complete. I waited on his quote for drywall while he continued his stud
work. Finally, he was able to give me a quote of $3,100 for drywalling (with materials)
when I got two additional quotes (1) $2,750 (with materials) 2) $2,600 (with materials)) that were well
under his quote. Mark's response was he couldn't go lower and he didn't
know how they were that low, so based on his workmanship errors and his
price, I chose to go with another drywall contractor. The questionable
workmanship errors were: studs were bowing out about 1/2-1", crooked
walls, no ceiling support every 16" (more like 30-60" which would have
had the drywall sag) and no over hangs for drywall to fasten. I
confronted him and he immediately said he would be correcting all of
these issues. He said he would be back Monday (2/25/13) to finish up
and correct the errors. Instead, I received a text message "I will not
be returning! I fell u have taken adxantage of my experience and
generosity! Good luck with ur project!" Now I am left getting the
drywaller that bid lower than he to fix Mark's mistakes for an
additional cost. I would take Mark to small claims court, but the fees
($90) and time wasted is not worth re-couping the couple hundred of
dollars from him.
and painted molding upstairs.
Again the only issues I had were with contacting him and having him follow-up (which was NOT timely) and the fact that he brought the smell of smoke into my home.
