Home Building Specialists

We contracted Home Building Specialists (HBS) in May 2011 and fired them in November 2011. Initially the service was good and the crew professional. As the project continued the McMinn's starting showing their colors, argumentative and rude. An example of of what we dealt with, our contract included a statement of ALL electrical per drawings -HBS says OH NO!! - that means electrical to code and wanted to charge $75 per every light, switch and plug over code. In October we discovered they purchased personal work tools and passed them off to us citing the charges were "electrical". Our roof was left open to the elements, rain, wind and bugs were our friends - Per HBS tarping the roof is not a standard of practice. We finally had to buy a tarp and ask to have it placed on the roof, which of course there is a charge ! They obviously do not know how to measure, doorways are different sizes, our master bedroom windows are off center, and we had to move plumbing to align with cabinets they measured. We terminated their services when we discovered their failure to provide us our rights as a home owner under California law. Our contract did not provide the ANY state mandated language. We as the consumer were left exposed and unaware we had options for payments (which included subcontractor payments), that liens could be placed on our home jeopardizing any sale or loan process. And now we are being sued for breach of contract because we rightfully ended the working relationship. Buyer beware on this group. They are no where near what appears on your doorstep to bid the job. I would say get everything in writing but their interpretation of their written word changes daily.
