The time frame for the project kept getting pushed back due to a wet spring. Not exactly their fault.
Some of the edging that they laid could have flowed a little bit better and I was disappointed that they didn't use any kind of base to keep them level so I'm worried that things will start shifting sooner rather than later. The design of the project was excellent (done by Chris with Paradise Ridge Landscaping). The planting/rocking/mulching went well and was done pretty quickly once they got going. They could have done a little bit better job of spreading the rock/mulch because the areas they did first are a little thin and the areas they did last are a little heavier. I'll have to go back over it to move some around and even it out.
I also had them put a drain tile under one of the beds due to how the yard lays out. Rather than using a 90 degree elbow they just bent the corrugated tubing up to the lawn so it isn't very stable. This must be a common practice in the industry though because the landscaper that seeded my lawn a few years back did the exact same thing when burying my downspouts. Needless to say those had to be dug up and corrected as I'll be doing with this one. I'm probably just a little picky on the little things that a lot of people probably don't notice or don't care about.
One thing that was a big issue at the end of the project was the bill. I was very up front about my budget. From the original meeting all the way through the project I asked several times about whether or not changes that were made would mean going outside the budget. I was assured every time that it should be pretty close to within the originally agreed upon number. When I got the bill, it was 50% OVER my budget. After much haggling, we were able to meet somewhere in the middle. While I was happy with the work and I feel that I did not overpay for what I got, I was very disappointed that they were not keeping a closer eye on the budget. Had I known what the project was actually going to cost me, I would have probably broken it up into two projects.
All in all I am happy with their work and would recommend them. I would just suggest that you get a written proposal and that any time the project changes get some sort of sign off that the budget is or is not changing.
