I chose to use Joe Fitzgerald with All Iowa Construction Services to install a copper colored metal roof on my new home. The house is 22 years old and is in bad need of a roof. The home was in foreclosure when I purchased it and had not been maintained for some time. I chose this company because they were highly referred to me, the price was right and he promised to expedite the ordering and construction process because of the importance of getting this roof on. I informed him that I have an escrow account that I can't touch from my lender until my roof was on. I closed on April 12, 2012 and wrote a check to Joe on Friday April 13th for $6,400.00 down and he deposited it. He informed me that the roof would be shipped the following Wednesday and he would get his crew on it as soon as it got here as he needed to strip the old shingles also. I never would get him to answer the telephone, and I would leave messages over and over again for him to call me and he would not. I would text him to call me, no response. I would call him and he would act like he would answer, then hang up like he got disconnected. When I finally did get to talk to him, it was two weeks later and he informed me at that time that the roofing material was four to five weeks out, thus a delivery date of May 25th. I was a nervous wreck waiting for fear the roof would leak every time it rained. I feel like he totally played games and lied to me. He told me that he didn't work for me, I said, "you have $6,400.00 of my money and you say you don't work for me?! I finally talked to his project manager, Luke Harris, and he said that he just talked to Joe and Joe said he just got off the phone with me....which was a lie (I had just gotten off work and no messages or missed calls on my phone). When I told him that I didn't just get off the phone with him, he called me a liar. That's when I had enough and told him by text that I wanted my money back and that they were officially fired! When I went to get the check, he wasn't going to give it to me unless I signed a release of liability form. I told him I wouldn't sign anything so he wasn't going to give me my check back. When I told him I would sign it, but didn't, I took the check and proceeded to get into my truck, then he came after me and grabbed the truck door and threw it open and was trying to get the check from me, and said, "I wasn't going anywhere with the check until I signed the release." My friend backed him off and told him what a bad business person he was and we left. He said he would stop payment on the check (which was my money/deposit)! I went to the Pleasant Hill police department and filed a report as I feel like I was personally assaulted and have never been treated like this before by any kind of contractor, etc. I was pretty shook up! I was at his bank at 9 am the next morning, cashing the check. So here I am, over 7 weeks later, with no roof and starting all over again! IF LOOKING AT THIS CONTRACTOR, DON'T! BAD EXPERIENCE FROM START TO FINISH!!!!
