My basement flooded from a freakish rainfall. I ripped the old paneling, ceiling and carpet out and set about hiring individual tradesmen, thinking I would general myself. This set me up for a series of disappointments, as they would assess the job, but then just stop communicating – no bid submitted. Frustrated, I turned to Craigslist to find a general contractor. I found instead a criminal. Literally. Bruce O. Young (eight priors, as I later found) and his sidekick, Michael Cortez (10 priors!) responded promptly, asked good questions, appeared to understand the task. They were anxious to start; overly so in hindsight. Long story short (and because recounting this depresses the **** out of me) they'd done about 35 man-hours of work in a little over three weeks, taken 1/2 down plus an unexpected "draw" and stopped showing up. The quality of work they did complete is horrific. They damaged SO many things in and around my home. And I now have to pay someone to tear their mistakes out and complete what's salvageable. They suck. I suck for taking a chance on them. Don't you suck, too.
