Jim Heskje Painting Specialist Cedar Rapids

We hired Jim Heskje Painting to paint the walls and trim in our basement remodel project. They did a great job. The team left the house every day with tools picked up and the place looking neat. They showed up when they said they would and we’re always on time. We were very pleased with Jim Heskje Painting and will definitely hire them again for our next project!

Heskje was hired to paint cabinets in our kitchen and laundry room. Prior to job start, the cabinets were in near-perfect condition - we simply wanted a new color as a part of a remodel. Initially, they failed to properly prep and sand the cabinets before painting, causing the paint to flake off immediately. The wrong primer was also used in this attempt. Heskje had the team come back and sand/strip our cabinets with chemical strippers, though we had asked them not to. The stripper damaged the interior of our cabinets and the sanding damaged the profiles of our cabinet doors and drawers. After the second attempt, it was discovered that the wrong paint color had been used (Heskje Painting's fault), causing the need for the cabinets to be stripped and painted yet again. The third attempt at the cabinet painting was performed by another crew. This attempt caused additional damage to the cabinet door and drawers (visible marks/holes, heavy over caulking of joints, blown out detail from over sanding). Additionally, they had drilled holes in every door and drawer to paint them, and did not bother to fill them. Heskje took the doors and drawers back a fourth time and still returned them with significant issues. We had to involve Heskje's insurance company (and had to use a lawyer to get Heskje to even submit a claim), who found them liable for damage, but their "fully insured" status only covers damage to things beyond the cabinets themselves - which included a significant number of items. Multiple attempts have been made to allow Heskje to make this situation right, as they promised they would do, and they have refused or failed to respond. The only thing they have offered is to try painting them again, which I will not allow due to the significant damage already sustained. Multiple painting and cabinet contractors have examined the cabinets and stated the cabinets are beyond repairable. We are now faced with replacing cabinets at our expense.

It was a pleasure to work with Jim on my home interior paint project. They are truly experts in painting and have far exceeded my expectations. I certainly would work with them on my future painting needs and have recommended to few of my friends. They are prompt in responding to my initial query. Came to my home for a quote and was very reasonable and flexible with their price. Both Jim and Russ put my interest the priority and suggested what’s best for my home. They recommended the sheen to go and even called the paint shop for ordering paints for my home. They sent their paint crew to my home within few days after the quote. Their team is very professional and respectful. They came promptly per the schedule and completed the paint job as per schedule. They asked for my approval and acceptance once the painting is complete and fixed few areas that I found to need touch ups. They cleaned the paint area before leaving the place. The paint job done was perfect and my home looks really nice after their work. Highly recommend JHPS for anyone who needs a friendly, professional and ethically sound painter for their home paint needs.

The painting was completed in 1 day and done amazingly well. They also moved the larger furniture before and after which was a huge help to us! We would definitely use them again!

Paint is chipping after only a few months. No response to requests to repair. Warranty seems non-existent.

There was some minor issues around some communication during the process. but the final result was great. The estimate was emailed from Jim, but was told to talk to Shannon.

•  The initial estimate mentioned our garage, but we did not want our garage painted. Estimate price not changed. Oops we did not mean to mention that, was thinking of other house we were estimating.
• We matched colors twice when they were finally ready to buy the paint; they misplaced the color choices from the first time we did this.They want 1/2 payment up front, which is not something I was accustomed to. It makes sense I guess, but I was not accustomed to writing such large checks in the first place. 
• But then Shannon came for the second check before the job was finished to save him a trip over to Mount Vernon, which again makes sense, but again --- I was not comfortable writing $3250 checks on demand especially before work was complete. But it worked out. 
•  The nasty Iowa weather interfered with their ability to paint entire house in one week. They did come by within reasonable time after that to finish up. I work from home, so having my house wrapped in paper on the windows for those extra days was nerve-wracking. But on the positive, they did the entire taping and masking over the windows type thing.
• We were very pleased with the final result. We really were impressed with Jim's work crew, their foreman "Willie", and the work they did.

The foreman of the crew is a gentleman, a good communicator, a perfectionist, and a pleasure to work with.  The crew was very efficient and professional.  I would recommend this crew to everyone.  The result was a perfect paint job.  The actual cost ran 1.3% higher than the estimate - - not unreasonable, but without explanation.

We hired Jim Heskje Painting to stain our exterior deck.  He sold us a product called "Decksscapes" a Sherwin Williams product.  Jim said that this product has a 4 year guarantee  It is 1 year later and our deck is pealing everywhere.  Everytime it rains the stain peals more and falls off.  I called Jim Heskje Painting and discussed the problem we are having.  He asked me if we shoveled the deck during the winter, I said no.  He then said that the representative for the Decksscapes product was just with him  (how convenient) and was asking him if there was anyone having problems with the product.  Jim said no one else has had a problem with this product, he indicated to me again that there is  a four year guarantee on "Decksscapes".  I decided to call Sherwin Williams to ask them about their product.  They said that this product will last only a year, maybe two, and there is not a 4 year guarantee.   
Jim said to me that he would come out next week to access the problem and if I did not hear from him to call.   Really!!!!!
We were lied to.

They were thoroughly prompt in replying. It was easy to schedule them in. It is now 8 months later and will not warranty their work.Our paint is coming up and washes off with rain on outer deck. They blamed the harsh winter. If that was the case every house with paint would be losing their paint as well..very disappointing.One should stand behind their product or not use it at all.
