BOOKING SERVICE
Hired them to fix a furnace. I hadn't called them in years. They still had me in their system (that was cool). They said a repairman for my furnace would come today, but couldn't guarantee a time, but they'll come today.
LATE/SLIDING APPOINTMENT
Arranged this at 8:30am, they didn't show until 6:30pm. Contacted dispatcher twice between these times. At 4pm she told me my service person was in North Liberty, IA and i was next. At 5:30pm she told me my service person was in Center Point, IA and I was next (39 miles from North Liberty, and now 35 miles from me vs. the 17 they'd been in North Liberty).
Flabbergasted that i wasn't next and that the service person had move farther away since i called asked 90min before, i asked "Will someone _actually_ for sure come tonight?" She said, "Today, yes," to being sure to reiterate we'd discussed they'd becoming 'today' and that night time, after 5 was considered _today_. I felt bad for this dispatcher / operator because they sounded like this was old hat for them to have these kinds of conversations, but that they didn't like it.
SERVICE PERFORMANCE
Service person was very good, professional, and pretty quick.
BUSINESS OPERATION
I was charged the overtime fee (about a third more the cost of the standard visit) for being serviced after 5pm. This. DESPITE CALLING EARLY IN THE MORNING. Because of the inconsistent info about where my service person was and me being next on the list and because they do commercial work as well, i'm convinced the employees of Affordable Heating and Cooling are instructed to plan and arrange as much residential service after 5 as possible to charge extra. Dispatcher / service operator sounded clearly used to people being grumpy with them for both late service and changing information about service.
This last paragraph is supposition or deduction, whatever you'd like to call it, but based only in my belief based on my experience and not on any direct knowledge. When you spend an entire day waiting with missed work and you can't leave your house for errands or anything, you have time to piece together a story of what _might_ be happening.
Everything works really well. Price I put in the approximate cost of service is very approximate- I can't locate the invoice just now.
The job took only six hours, start to finish. There were a number of changes made to how the previous installation had been done. The old gas shutoff was no longer up to code, a new PVC intake pipe for fresh air to the furnace was installed, the breaker that the AC condensor was on was dropped from a 40 amp to a 30 amp to provide proper protection for the unit. The furnace itself was installed facing 180 degrees from the previous. allowing much more room for service in the future.
We have a had a couple of minor issues requiring callbacks that have been handled promptly by Affordable.
All in all, we are very happy with the new equipment. The AC, if course won't be used by us for another month or two. The furnace, however, continues to impress us with how quiet it is. We no longer have the wide swings in temperature as the house is brought up to temp, only to cool back down to where demand is called for and another heating cycle begins. If you don't look at the thermostat or put your hand over a register, you don't know if it is running or not. The only time you can hear the furnace at all is when full heat is called for at the beginning of a new thermostat setting. The steadiness and continuity of temperature control is a new level of comfort, as are the rooms that previously stayed colder than the rest of the house.
My signing up for Angie's List was a result of doing research on this installation. There is not much feedback for hvac contractors in our area so I felt compelled to make public our experience. Replacing a furnace and/or central AC is not a small project, nor is it an inexpensive one. There is a lot of consolidation going on in the manufacturers of furnaces and AC units, so it is difficult for consumers to get good info on what equipment maker to choose. You live with your decision for a long time. We hope that this Lennox equipment turns out to be as trouble-free as our Amana units that we had previously, were. We do have the point in pride of our choice, however, knowing that it is made in Iowa by Iowans, so we are supporting our local economy in our purchasing decision. Only time will tell how this sophisticated, new equipment performs over the long haul.
How do we feel about our choice of Affordable Heating and Cooling shortly after installation? We feel like we made the right decision and that we can recommend them wholeheartedly to others.
