Rainbow Roofing's Ken came to inspect the damage on June 15. He was very professional, happy to answer all our questions -- some of them about general roofing questions, not necessarily related to the particular damage at hand. He alerted us to the fact that we would need a couple of extra tiles since one or two would need to be broken in order to take off a section of the roof. But we had plenty of extras. When we asked for the price during this visit, he said it would take approximately two people four hours to do the work, at about $50 per hour per man hour and less than $100 for materials. So at the time we figured in our minds that it probably come to about $800, adding some overhead. When we received the contract it was for $1,250, a fair bit more overhead than we had anticipated. Since another company -- one we did not use in the end -- did exactly the same thing, telling us orally that it would take 4 man hours for $50 plus materials but later gave us a written quote for $1,800, I suspect this approach may be a practice common in the industry. The next time I'd be more specific question about the anticipated total cost. Our communication with the company prior to getting the work done was poor. We didn't get a date for the repair until four days before it was done, about 2-3 weeks after signing the contract. Once, when I called hoping to get a date, Ken was busy and said he'd call back later that day. He did not call for a week. Earlier we also had agreed that they would deliver the boards several days before the repair date so that we could paint them before they were being put up. So when we got the date four days prior to the work being done Ken promised to send the boards the next day. That did not happen. We only found them after coming home from work the night before the repair, which meant we had to paint them right then and there, tired or not. I felt that was quite inconsiderate of the homeowner's own time table. The repair people were to come at noon but were there before ten o'clock in the morning. They were pleasant, courteous, did a very nice job and cleaned up after their work. So we were very satisfied with the final result. It was the process of getting there that was not so great and accounts for the overall grade I place on our experience. If we had a need for roof work in the future I probably would use the Rainbow Roof again, but be more specific when initially asking for the total cost and ask for a better communication process.

While it took awhile to get the estimate and the various options I requested, I was pleased with the pricing and simple contract. The other companies from which I requested estimates were more responsive in providing pricing, but Mike was the low bid and only marginally slower.
It took a 2 weeks between signing the contract and scheduling the work, and another 2 weeks for the work to begin. The crew showed up at the scheduled time, and started work right away. They showed up early every day, but didn't start till 8:30 am so the noise would not disturb the neighbors. The crew was courteous and respectful (even the neighbors commented on this), and cleaned up every day. Overall, an excellent job by a great crew. Rainbow's subcontractor, Giant Solar, took all day to reinstall the water heater and did a great job fitting the old heater, using new stainless steel bolts, and testing it before leaving. The entire job took 5 days, just what was estimated, even though the roofing distributor loaded the wrong shingles and lost 3-4 hours unloading and reloading the roof. It helped that there wasn't a drop of rain that week, in spite of being in Manoa.

Came quickly and had roof covered within two days so at least we wouldn't continue to get water in the house. Completed project in one day within one week of my original call. Professional, pleasant and reliable. Would definitely use again.

Called to repair roof when it leaked. It took a week of constant calling before Mike came to access the problem. Roof was patched 1/21/11. It leaked again during next rainfall(2/6/11),Called Jody 2/7/11. Leak patched on 2/25/11. It leaked again on 2/27/11. I called again to inform of leak. Work was scheduled for 3/8/11. No one showed up at appointed time. I called to find out that the workman was sick for the day. No one called to inform me. Another repairman was sent and the leak was finally addressed. I had to call constantly to remind them of the leak.

They were really good. They were punctual. They do residential and commercial. We were able to get a much better price by calling them directly rather than going through our property manager. Professional and the best price.
