The crew showed up around 9AM. The weather was cloudy and misty. I asked the foreman to wait to see if the weather would get better. He told me that it would be OK to start and that once the stain was down the mist would not effect it. During the installation the foreman informed me that they were putting extra stain down to insure the installation would be OK. Mid day it started to rain and again I asked to foreman to cease operations and again he assured me that with the extra stain the moisture would not affect the out come. Within a day after the install the stain started to bubble and turn white. They sent a couple of guys out to correct the areas in question and assured me again that the white spots go away, not did the white spots not go away but the stain lifted in a couple areas. The following spring I started to wash down the decks with water only and the stain just washed off the deck leaving large areas with no stain or a bubbled finish. I call the owner, Gilbert Simpson who proceeded to tell me that deck stain in the mountains only lasts for 12 to 18 months, there is no warranty and if I expected any money back that that would not hanpen, and that he would contact the manufactures rep to see if the product, Cabot Austrailian Deck Oil was faulty. Cabot was acquired by Valspar paint and coatings. I contacted Valspar and spoke with one of their techs. The tech requested photos and tape samples, you take tape and lay it on the deck, lift the tape, and send the tape with the stain and deck wood, that adheres to the tape and send it back to him, the manufacturer. After emails and phone conversations the Valspar tech informed that the product install was not correct and also said that putting extra stain on the deck defeats the purpose as the stain gets a film on the surface and will not penetrate the deck wood. Our attorney contacted Simpson and Simpson made it clear that they were not at fault and that the install was proper and we could sue them. Squeaky Clean would not take any responsibility for the poor workmanship. In fact he, Simpson reiterated that deck stain in the mountains only lasts a short time. I told him that the deck that he stained had the original stain on it and it lasted over 5 years. I can provide emails from the product manufacturer if needed.

David Cohen
