We spotted a water leak in our main line outside the house after seeing huge water bill. We submitted an online service request to our home warranty company and A Total Plumbing was assigned our work order. In the morning my wife talked to A Total Plumbing and told them that there is a water LEAK OUTSIDE OUR HOUSE NEAR WATER METER and we had to call the city to shut the water off. She said that she will rush the plumber in the afternoon. At around 1:15 PM a plumber (I think his name was Joe) and his helper came. The first thing he asked me was for payment of service charge which was weird because I had home warranty and other contractors come before and it never happened before. I asked him "you want service fee before you do anything??????????" and he said yes it is our policy and there is an additional $2/- charge for credit card transaction (the office told my wife about that earlier). He collected the payment and then called someone and told me that warranty company does not cover leaks outside the house. I asked him that credit card won't be charged, right? He said no it will be because it is our "policy" and that is just for knocking on your door. During this conversation he told me that warranty companies don't cover ANYTHING outside the main foundation, they only cover up to 100 feet for sewage backup. It was clear that he was aware of warranty coverage and their customs. Then he quoted me $375/- just for digging up and finding the problem and repair would be on top of that. This was simply unacceptable so I refused any further service. The plumber told me to call the office and talk to the owners for refund. I called the office and asked them to request a call back from the owner Felicia. She called back and spoke to my wife but refused to refund our money because it was their trip charges even though they knew it won't be covered under home warranty plan.
It seems very unprofessional and unethical to me that they charged me trip charges for a trip they knew won't be approved by home warranty company. The office was aware of the leak outside and hence so was the plumber. They were also aware that outside leaks are not covered by home warranty but just wanted to come in any way to get some more business for them and collect trip charges for nothing. They did not even identify the problem.
To me it seems so unfair and I want refund of my $77/-. If I had known that this was not covered (they could have told us in the morning) then I would have contacted some plumbers for this unforeseen repair earlier and would have had the chance to shop around for better price
Response from Ace Hardware Home Services
"We subcontract the work from your home warranty company. They have different coverages for different policy's ,joe called the warranty company after diagnosis of the job and was informed by the warranty company that this was not covered under your policy. We do not have a copy of your contact only you and the warranty company have access to this. We have to call in to let them know what is wrong and they make the decision to cover or not-cover. As far as the service fee the hone warranty company request us to try to collect upon arrival . You can contact them at 1-800-776-4663 and if you told them it was a leak outside they should have told you it was not covered You can discuss with them about the refund . If I can help you in any way you can call me at 770-507-5424"

Joe called ahead of time to let my husband know that he was on his way. He arrived on time. When he assessed what was wrong, he knew right away what to do. He "massaged" the drain with a heavy duty plunger and within a few minutes water flowed as if nothing was wrong. He fixed the problem, cleaned up his tools, and left all in under 15 minutes. Great service!

It took them several days to visit my home, which I guess is to be expected when using a home warranty. The tech, "Cory", came out and was obviously very sick. He should not have been working. Without doing anything, he noticed a piece of a broken flower pot and began trying to convince me that I had terracotta pipes that needed to be excavated. (Our home was inspected one month prior when we purchased the house and I know for a fact that I do not have terracotta pipes). He didn't want to do any work - was convinced that it wouldn't make a difference. I had to pretty much beg him to get his auger and attempt to clear the line. He did, and after about 30 seconds, he told me he couldn't' put the auger in the pipe because there was a major "root blockage" and once again he insisted the only repair would be to pull the pipe out, a cost of nearly $9,000.
I had DELTA PLUMBING come out the next day and their technician was able to clear the line with an auger - (previous owners flushed rag/mop pieces and they were causing the stoppage).
I called A Total back to explain the situation and spoke with the owner Richard. I tried to explain the situation only to have Richard call me a liar, say I didn't know what I was talking about and then threaten to invoice me for their time outside of my home warranty if I dared to dispute the transaction with my credit card company.
I would have never used this company and I hope my warrant doesn't force me to in the future. If you have the severe misfortune of having to use them, make sure you watch over them and make them do their jobs OR just save your time, spend the money and hire people with integrity.

I have used this firm before and they are always on time and professional.  They cleared a drain clog in my kitchen sink.  Company is my "go to" plumber.  Thank you.

I used A Total Plumbing through my Home Warranty.  I had three issues, but only two were covered under my home warranty.  They came and replaced a broken garbage disposal and also tightened a loose shower head that had been leaking and spraying water in all directions.  They were quick and very professional.  I received an estimate for the service that was not covered by the home warranty and will probably get some other quotes before calling them back to perform the service.  It is something that is not vital to be repaired so I may wait until after winter.

I use A Total through my Homeowners Warranty contract.  Had a leak from an unknown source with water damage in closet under the stairwell and on the ceiling. We were pretty sure it was our master bath but the plumber who came said it was our washing machine and tightened everything up. 3 weeks later, the rug and walls were still wet.  Called again and this time Cory came out and had the issue fixed in minimum time with minimum mess.
It was in fact the master bath shower and he had to cut a few holes in the wall to find the leak and then repair it.  He was more interested in fixing the problem than the first plumber and I appreciated his determination.  The company called me back right away, had me scheduled for emergency service (on a Friday afternoon) and then bumped me up into a better time slot when one opened.  Cory was on time, cleaned up the mess, was professional and gave me advice for how to further fix the cosmetic damage.  Even though they are through the warranty contract, I would use them for any plumbing issue outside the warranty.
I wasn't happy about the fact that it took 2x to find the problem but I am rating the call for this time and the great job Cory did.

Things went terribly, I can't believe they shape they left my basement. Mud, dirt, and debris everywhere. The most frustrating part is that they refuse to admit they did it.

Although it took awhile, he did eventually return. It's what happened next that is unbelievable. Mike came back to tell me that he couldn't TOUCH my water heater because it didn't meet Georgia code and company policy says that he can't touch anything if it doesn't meet code. Mike told me that he went back to the office (over 40 miles one way) to copy the section of the code so that he could show me (which I already knew as my house was built in the 1960s!) He drove all the way back to tell me he couldn't do anything. How ridiculous! Why not tell me while he was here the first time? Why not call me? I told him a very reputable plumbing company had installed a thermal expansion tank on it the previous week without a question, but my home warranty company assigned A Total Plumbing. AHS Home Warranty company said this company was wrong and what happened was not acceptable, then reassigned call. AHS said A Total Plumbing CAN repair, but can't replace water heater unless brought up to code.

Good job on the regulator, but sloppy work on the water heater. The bottom of new water heater was dented. They also also melted the plastic gasket around relief valve and burned the paint. This was not necessary, given that this work should have been done with the valve off the heater, then put on the heater. Neither affected functionality, but not professional. Looks bad. Promised to redo, but have not in a month.

Alan was our technician. He was very polite and efficient, immediately diagnosed the problem and took care of it (needed a new disposal). I would give these folks a try if I had a problem where I needed to source my own plumber.
