We checked Champs Bed & Breakfast out before taking our golden retriever there for a day.  We came by a week ahead and toured their facility, talked with the owner and watched their overall process.  This place is a gem hidden behind some other businesses but  worth the effort to find.  The building almost looks like a former duplex home but the middle separating wall between the units.  The building set up is much like a square inside of another square.  The doors to the bedrooms have been replaced with a doggy gate.  The hallways are connected in such a way that on bad weather days, the dogs can actually play in the hallways during time together.  Each dog has their own bedroom so when play time is over, they have their own room to go back to rest, nap or eat a treat.  Each dog has a card outside their bedroom telling the staff the special characteristics of the dog, such as afraid of men, needs time to feel comfortable in new circumstances, etc.  Special care is taken when needed.  There was one dog there that had a medical condition that will not allow him to play rough without getting hurt so the note alerts staff to make sure he was not placed in play with the "rough & ready" group.  Outside they have three fenced in areas for outside play.  Two of the fenced in areas had gravel and grass areas and the third area was a cement slab.
We have two golden retrievers, one is six years old and the other is eleven months old and full of "puppiness".  The puppy wants to play and can be a bit of a playground bully.  She is constantly biting the ears and ankles of our six year old golden.  She is in play mode and not fight mode but just doesn't realize how big she is.  She outweighs our six year old golden too.  Since our six year old golden is very timid and passive, we thought a day of puppy playtime would be a good outlet for our eleven month old to burn off some of her excess energy.  Champs did that and more!  We really liked that Champs does not use a corral set up with multiple dogs in one area.  They treat each dog like the furry baby they are to their owners.  They made sure they had play time outside and inside if weather was bad.  The dogs were not in a traditional kennel run made out of wire fencing and exposed to the weather and temperatures outside.  This place was very clean!  They pay close attention to the animals needs for a balance between active time and time to rest.  To us, it felt like we had a trusted babysitter that taking excellent care of our baby (with fur on).
They actually have a staff member spend the night with the dogs when they have an overnight boarder.  Their fees for day care are reasonable and in line with what other pet boarding and daycare services are charging.  We have not used their overnight services and probably won't since we have two dogs and that might be more than we could afford to pay for long term, such as if we were on a trip and could not take our dogs with us.
The only thing we did not like that much was the close proximity of their location to major busy roads and very close to the I-20 Washington Road interchange.  Champs is actually tucked behind a Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and a hotel.  You actually have to wind your way through the parking lots for the other businesses and go to the side of the hotel near the back to get to Champs.  That said, they are worth making the effort to find!  They give such personal attention to each dog that they are definitely a gem!  We felt very comfortable leaving our puppy there.
