Mansfield Landscaping LLC

About us

Our company was founded in 1982 by Steve Mansfield who is still the owner/operator. It was originally named A-1 Landscaping of Orlando, Inc. Some 30 years later in 2007 we took on a partner and future total owner, Ronald Martin, our son-in-law. Steve Mansfield is from Central Illinois where he grew up in 5 boy's homes and 17 foster homes. He moved to Orlando in 1980 and after a couple of years of sleeping in and out of his car as well as flop houses, and working in labor pools for $25.00 per day, he realized he needed to develop a plan for a better life. He took his $54.00 and a loan from a friend of $600.00, and turned it into a multi-million per year business. He never forgets where he came from and has donated in excess of 1 million dollars to places he's lived in as well as local boy's homes in Orlando such as Edgewood Children's Ranch. From 1982-2000 we worked mainly in the Orlando area grossing 2 million per year doing landscaping, sodding, and irrigation. From 2000-2007 we did all the sod, irrigation, grating, and landscaping on new homes as well as existing homes at the Plantation of Leesburg. The project built out on December of 2006 and we stayed until the completion. When we first started with this project there were 4 landscapers until 3 months later when they narrowed it down to just us. We did 1700 homes, 5 model homes, and 2 club houses. In 2006, we changed our name to Mansfield Landscaping LLC., from A-1 Landscaping of Orlando, Inc. In 2007 we started doing after market landscaping in the Villages, Florida as well as the rest of Central Florida. For the six years that we have been in the villages we have worked for over 4,000 customers. We created a world class nursery and outdoor showroom and estimate that even though we have a hundred competitors in the Villages alone that we do 1 out of every 5 after market jobs. Our philosophy is simple; keep our word, do what we say, and do whatever it takes to make the customer happy. That's why there's never a deposit required. If you are not happy we will do what it takes to make you happy. Estimates never take more than 1-2 days and jobs never take more than 3-10 days.

Extensive landscaping involved. Ron, who responded and worked out the estimate, was polite, personable and accommodating. The workers arrived as scheduled and worked long and hard. All work and cleanup was accomplished in three days. Cody and Pat were especially helpful and accommodating. Concrete curbing installed along one side of house by sub-contractor: Kwik Kerb. Their work was also outstanding.

During the vendor selection process, I found the owner a bit difficult to deal with but he convinced me that he had the experience and expertise to do the job better than anyone else. I put up with his pertinent attitude and just shrugged it off as a personality quirk. The job was a big job $15K and I give it a C. The landscaping walls were not sealed and the top blocks were not cemented on well. I had a back patio installed with Flagstone, his most expensive option. It was a disaster. They didn't grout it but used something they called "gator dust". It started washing out almost immediately. After complaining several times, they offered to take the flagstone out but not refund any of my money. Live and learn. I would not recommend this company based on my experience.

They were professional, prompt, friendly and available for any questions or issues we had. They followed up with us afterward to make sure we were happy and to make sure we knew they would stand by their work and plants etc. They have a beautiful showroom and nursery of the products they sell and can advise you on any issue pertaining to your landscaping needs. They are a full service company with many years experience and a great crew and project supervisor.  They all work well together.  We would use then again for any of our landscape needs.

A = Excellent. They answered the phone. They showed up exactly when they said they would both days. Mansfield Landscaping brought enough people to get a large job completed in 2 days. They were very professional and worked all day both days. Steve sent out a landscaping team that had a person in-charge who I could talk to and ask any questions. It was nice having one person running the show.

Mansfield also sent sprinkler people the second day to make the inevitable repairs and changes to the sprinkler system based on the new landscaping. The team cleaned up every day and kept me informed. Steve (the owner) inspected all the work the last day before his team of landscapers left the property.

I hired Mansfield Landscaping because I had a landscaping problem and after talking with Steve I could see that he understood the problem and had the vision to see the solution. He was honest about the price. If I had hired everything separately it would have cost the same or more and it would not have had the quality and speed of this project. He guaranteed the work. There were no surprises, no hassles and no headaches. Steve's a busy guy, to the point, and talks pretty fast - but don't let that throw you. He's been in the business forever and knows everything about landscaping in Florida.

After the work was completed they delivered exactly what Steve said they would and they fixed the problem (neighbors of course). Now my property looks better than it ever did and I wish I would have hired Mansfield to complete this project sooner. I am going to hire them again in the next few weeks for a smaller project. I wanted to be sure and write this review because it is easy to forget when someone does a great job and they did a great job start-to-finish.

The stone replcement turned out okay. however, I feel I was over charged. The new shrubs were not what I expected.

This is the first time I've ever posted anything online about anyone, let alone a contractor.
I called Mansfield Landscaping for a simple estimate to have my flower beds redone. The owner asked me to answer four very short questions. I answered and told him that I simply wanted to redo my flower beds, that I saw him on Angie's List, that I received his promotional flyers in the mail and that I'd like to arrange for an estimate. He told me that before I could do that that I needed to give him a few minutes so that he can run through the process. I said that would be OK.
After listening quietly to his sales pitch, not for a few minutes but exactly 16 minutes, I told him that I needed to get back to work and could we schedule an estimate. He asked me NOT TO INTERUPT HIM! After another minute I asked again about an estimate and the line went dead. I called him back and told him that we'd been disconnected but he told me that he'd and quot;hung up purposefully because it's obious that if I can't give him any time we could never get along!and quot;
I was dumbstruck!!! I quietly gave him 17 minutes to do his sales talk and he hung up on me! Just totally rude and obnoxious. He expects potential customers to give him the courtesy of our time but he didn't have any respect for my time. The strangest phone call I've ever had. If he's this rude and obnoxious on the telephone how does he ever successfully satisfy his customers???
Goi ahead and call him and see if he doesn't do the same thing to you if you interrupt him. Good riddance!

It seemed to go fine at first. there was a problem with sealing on curbing to be done and I had to wait 4 days for it to be completed. The curbing work was substandard. Much of the work was ill thought out and may cause me to spend money to repair some of the problems. Stone work was not even sealed. Queen palm was located to close to the home and stone wall....wall is not showing signs of separating because of root ball not having enough room to expand thus pushing the stone work away from it. I also should have been informed that queen palms located to close to the home could be a hazard to the home should they topple from high winds and rain during hurricane like conditions. i had some of the shrubs replaced due to them dying because of poor placement by the workers. These plants were planted either too deep or too shallow. i have about 6 podocarpus plants that are dying and need to be taken out. I called mansfield within the warranty period but got to return calls.
I mainly dealt with Ron who was very pleasant but still the work done had flaws since I have had other professional landscaping companies point out many of these flaws to me. Steve Mansfield the owner of the company is very difficult to deal with.
Overall there is little concern from this company about potential problems that may occur due to poor workmanship or poor choices of shrubs/trees/palms used. Or maybe it was just incompetance. And if you have to get back to the company to correct any problems good luck as phone calls were not returned. Steve Mansfield is a very short tempered and does not stand by his work. All in all I will need to correct some of his work in the future.
I don't recommend him and persuaded my next door neighbor not to use this company. And many other persons I speak with say they have heard bad things about this company.

The installers were always prompt, pleasant and courteous at all times. They walked us thru the installation and made any changes and tweeks we requested. All the trees and plants were extremely healthy. The installation was completed on-time. We were completely satisfied and would highly recommend them to anyone (and have alread done so) and we would definitely use them again!

They did a real good job. I was impressed with their speed and their quality of work. I would recommend them to others. They do a lot of work around the villages and they just seem like nice people to work with.

Steve arrived at our house during the time period he had stated he would arrive. He made the determination that the 1 palm that had blown over could not be replanted. He gave us his recommendation to leave the remaining palm in place rather than going to the expense of replacing it with another double palm. We agreed that this was the best option. Steve had the downed palm removed from our property at no expense to us.
