I absolutely hate getting my car fixed. I have a giant red tattoo on my forehead that says SUCKER that I can't see but everyone else can. So I get ripped off a lot and have to be very careful. American Auto Repair only had 5 reviews on Angie's List, but all were As, so I went over there to see about making an appointment for the growling noise and dragging feeling in my car. We are taking a road trip soon and I can't have the car breaking down on the way.
The owner came out of his office right away and I explained about the noise. He immediately thought it was the rear brakes or a hub bearing. He showed me the rust behind the hubcaps and asked if I'd been up north for a while. I had moved from Seattle, so yep, he got that right. He said new brakes or new hub bearings could cost up to $400, but to let him put the car up on the lift first before he told me anything for sure. He was in the middle of some other repair, so I went to get lunch and came back. He was ready for me, put the car right up, took things apart, and told me the brakes were fine but I had a bad hub bearing. He said the other hub bearing was fine, just this one needed replacing, and quoted me $179.76.
Now, this man could have talked me into ANYTHING. I don't have a clue. I know I need a tune up and an oil change as well and I don't know when the brakes were last replaced. I even asked about these things. He told me all I needed was the hub bearing. He said eventually the other one would probably go, but that might be years and now I knew what to listen for, and if the car was otherwise running fine to relax and just get this fixed for now.
He parked me on this really nice couch in their breezy waiting area and fixed my car in under an hour. The same day I took it in to ask about it! And the bill was exactly $179.76, no extra charges or games. Oh, he also brought me the bad hub bearing once he got it out of the car and showed me how it wasn't rotating smoothly. I thought that was pretty cool, because I could instantly see what was making the noise and dragging on the car.
My car is getting old and things are starting to go. I've neglected it because I can't stand most repair places and the awful games they play. American Auto on Havendale is going to be seeing a LOT of me! I was extremely impressed and also grateful that he was such a professional. I will definitely go back and I recommend this place, especially to clueless women.

He gave us an estimate for how much it would cost to fix one side of the engine (Piston #3). We'd rather use that money toward another car.
They were very friendly and honest with me so I would go back.

Unbelievable experience! My son has limited funds and his truck was running hot. We took it in and were told that they would do a pressure test to see where the leak was. We were told it may be $600-800. Got the phone call that it was no where near what they thought and it cost my son $300,. and he had a tool box in the bed that had not been mounted that they took care of for him, and they checked out and added air to his tires. The truck is running great and I am raving about this place to my friends

They're very personable and friendly. They really go out of their way to meet your needs. (i.e. brought me home so I don't have to wait around and offered to help me with any place I need to go this week while they're servicing my car). Mark and Paul are the contacts there. I've been working with them for about 3 or 4 years.

Our '97 Toyota T-100 was experiencing a vibration at high speed and showed signs of uneven and dangerous wear on the front tires. Mark at American Auto diagnosed the problem and made the necessary repairs in a timely manner and with respect for our budget. He came highly recommended by my husband's cowoker, and we are now happy to recommend him to others as well. He seems capable, honest and reliable.
