concrete overlay project. Paid $1400 up front.
6/3/13: Concrete overlay and first coat of paint was put down.
Homeowner had pressure washed the surface 2 days before, but there was not any
other deck preparation done. A few hours later that day there was
significant rainfall, but we were assured by the owner/contractor that the overlay job
would be fine and if there were any issues that they would be resolved.
Owner also requested $400 of the final payment upfront before job was complete.
6/10/13: After rain delays and no-shows, contractor arrived an put down
2nd and 3rd coat of paint. At our insistence, he also re-applied concrete overlay to a couple
of areas that appeared to be flaking up after all the rain. Also, put
down 1st coat of clear coat. Paid $100 extra for a 2nd coat of clear coat.
Paid $1100 for remainder of job with promise that he would return later
that day to put down 2nd coat of clear coat. Never showed up or called.
6/11-6/13: Multiple calls and promises to show up, but never showed up.
We really wanted to believe and trust this guy, but it always seemed to us that
once we wrote a check, he made a bee-line to the bank to cash it and then
didn't properly respond to our concerns.
6/14/13: Contractor arrived unannounced and put down 2nd clear
coat. Later that day we noticed cracks and delamination of the concrete
overlay. Also, by tapping the plastic handle of a screwdriver lightly
across all areas of the newly laid concrete overlay, we could determine that there
are many areas that have a hollow pocket underneath the overlay meaning that
the overlay was not adhered properly to the surface below ( I believe this is a
direct result of not properly preparing the deck surface before applying the
concrete overlay).
Called the contractor with these issues and was promised that he would take
care of it (Also states on signed contract that a one year warranty is in
effect with this project if there is any problem from application or color
fading).
6/15/13: Contractor called me and stated that he would make it right and
would take care of all issues with the project...he stated he would be on-site
Monday, 6/17/13.
6/17/13: Contractor never showed up or called.
Various dates: Have attempted to call and leave messages for Deco-Concrete
of Tampa, but to no avail. I believe he was off the grid for awhile with
personal affairs that he needed to get in order. I was very understanding
and gave him every benefit of the doubt and gave him plenty of time (months
now) to make this right. I have since contacted the company
supplier: Increte Systems that sold Deco-Concrete of Tampa this concrete
overlay system and also trained him on the application. Increte was gracious
enough to allow me, the homeowner, to purchase the proper supplies to
"patch" my deck when necessary.
There have been about 8 spots so far that have cracked, delaminated and peeled
up enough to where I have had to chip & chisel the bad spot away...then mix
and apply the concrete overlay product, then repaint the 3 coats of paint and
clearcoat. Obviously, the "patch" job doesn't look
exactly like the original overlay, but it's the best I can do.
I know there will be more "patch" jobs in the future as other areas
increasingly crack & delaminate.
At this point, I don't feel like I'll ever hear back from the contractor and
it's probably not going to be resolved by the contractor.
I just want others to beware!
Please do your homework and due diligence before hiring Deco-Concrete of Tampa
for your home project.
I really wanted this to work and I wanted to trust this company because they
have a lot of nice pictures of their work, but unfortunately it hasn't worked
out for us.
Everyone will answer & give an account one day!
So, we are at peace with this!
