Our total agreed on price was $400 for he and a partner.
He said they would be in and out with all the work done in four hours.
He needed $100 cash to pay his and quot;tree climberand quot;, so we insisted on giving him a check as down payment so he would at least have that amount on hand in case we didn't get back before they were finished.
We called him on the 28th, but no answer.
When we arrived at the house that evening, it was evident no tree/bush service had been performed.
I called John and he said he had a big job that came up after he spoke with us so he didn't have time to do ours, but he had decided to do it Monday instead.
I reminded him we were leaving town by then and wouldn't be back until February.
I said he should have called us if he was going to change the time, since we had agreed on that Saturday to accommodate him.
He seemed so anxious for the work, we were willing for him to do it during the time we were gone and pay him when we returned on the 28th, but he insisted on us being there so we could pay him on the spot.
John offered to hold the deposit and do the job when we returned in February, but I advised him it would be better for him to return the deposit, we would start over in February and reconsider his services then.
I gave him our address over the phone for him to mail a check to us since he had already cashed ours.
That is the last we heard from him.
We have called and left messages numerous times on his voicemail.
He has neither returned our calls, nor our money.
So sad.
He seemed both knowledgeable and eager for the work.
Update: I left a message offering to give an honest review on Angie's List, and John called us back.
He claimed he has been too busy and is not good at getting back to people in spite of his voicemail message promise to call right back.
We made arrangements for him to return the cash last weekend.
He did not follow through and although we have called daily and left messages offering to meet him, he has not returned any of our calls.
