Masonry Work
Tom Cooley, mason, was hired to correct a very badly done new stone hearth and fireplace facing. Tom also does home repairs and carpentry. At one point in his career, he installed fireboxes which turned out to be a very lucky coincidence for me! He corrected other potential issues from the person originally hired to remove an old firebox, install a new one, install a new hearth, new stone facing, and mantel. With this background knowledge in mind he did the following:
1. Tore out the already mortared in stone hearth pieces that were pieced together terribly.
2. Tore out the participial installed stone facing done terribly.
3. Correctly secured the Durock wall the stone was going on as it would have likely collapsed under the near 1000 pound weight of the stone.
4. Framed in the new firebox which had not and should have been.
5. Discovered no insulation had been installed in the chimney which the contractor took care of.
6.. Discovered no firestop had been installed in the chimney which was corrected by the contractor but was to have been done by the original hire.
7. Mortared in the 2 hearth stones correctly.
8. Installed the floor to ceiling stone fireplace facing.
Tom will forever have my sincerest gratitude for pointing out potential problems he wasn't even hired for and getting them corrected. The stone work performed...EXCELLENT! I'm still pinching myself that this beautiful piece of work is in my home. I can't recommend Tom and his crew highly enough for masonry work.
