Needless to say, I shopped this job for quite a while. I was disappointed with the number of fence companies who wouldn’t take the work at all, as well as with the number of custom-fence builders who tried to tell me how they were going to build it, instead of listening to me tell them how I wanted it built. I chose Mossy Oak because they were willing to build a fence the way I wanted it. More importantly, they were eager to take the job because as Shane put it, the job would “challenge their skills” and allow them to “show what kind of work they can do”.
From the very first interaction with Mossy Oak, things went well. Shane arrived punctually for the estimate and was both knowledgeable and informative. He took his time to understand what I wanted done, and then carefully measured the area and took photos. A quote arrived one day later.
I paid a 50% deposit and then a few weeks later, I got a Friday-afternoon call saying they’d like to do the job on Monday. The crew showed up on time, and got to work right away getting the old fence down. The new fence went up at a slower pace, but the precision with which they worked was impressive. Each post is perfectly true and precisely lined up with the others. The pickets are carefully measured to be of even height across the top. It seemed to be the industry norm that the crews would eyeball the spacing between the pickets, but when I questioned them about it, they stopped eyeballing and started to measure the spacing between pickets thereafter. Mossy Oak cuts dados into each of its posts at the top, which is a very nice touch, and saves the expense of buying and installing post-caps.
I found the crews to be easy to communicate with, very hard-working, and accommodating. They take great pride in their workmanship, and the couple of errors I discovered as they were building the fence were very quickly corrected. They seemed genuinely disappointed in themselves that they had made a mistake, which reassured me about their sense of pride in their work and the finished product I was going to receive.
They weren’t able to complete the job in a single day, so they returned the next day on time, as promised, and began right away to finish up. I wasn’t able to stay at home this day, but by lunchtime, they were calling me with a heads-up that they’d be done in 30 minutes. Another person was with them when I got home (a supervisor maybe??) and we all walked the job to look it over. One more mistake was found, and again, the crew was embarrassed and quickly fixed it.
I am very pleased with the job, and after a few weeks, I have not noticed anything of concern, like leaning posts, or warped pickets. We’ve had a couple good windstorms and downpours, and the fence is solid.
The things that I’d offer as suggestions for improvement are minor:
(1) Communicate more regularly while customers are in between payment and scheduling. Perhaps as weekly email or text message would save time over phone calls, and still let the customer know you’re working on their project.
(2) Have the crew go over the job in detail prior to getting started. Special concerns that are voiced to the estimator do not always make their way to the construction crew.
The things that I thought were really noteworthy were:
(1) Mossy Oak will do the job the way you want it done. Where other custom-fence builders said no, Mossy Oak made it happen!
(2) The crews display an enviable work ethic. They work hard all day, and stop very infrequently for breaks. I noticed that they never took breaks simultaneously – someone was always working.
(3) The quality of workmanship is impressive. The crews understand carpentry, take care to make everything straight and true, and they can make mitered cuts as easily as straight ones.
(4) Their impact is minimal. They were very careful with the landscaping and irrigation, and they cleaned their mess (including sawdust!) after each day. They take great pride in what they do and it shows.
Mossy Oak is not the cheapest company in town, by any stretch, but you get what you pay for. The products they use are of good quality, and their workmanship is unrivaled. I would refer them without hesitation – you’ll be glad you chose them.
Jeff Spears was the saleperson who came out and was a complete professional, providing a layout of the installation with all details spelled out. Three other vendors were contacted; one declined to come out because they don't work outside of 8 to 5, Monday through Friday, one provided an estimate 2.5 weeks later, and the other just scribbled a price on his business card. The others were also rude and condescending and criticized a previous install. Since the fence was extra tall it had to go through the HOA but Mossy Oak was patient waiting for the approval. Once it came, the 2-man crew was very professional, removed all the old fencing and did a great job on the install. New fence looks great and we are very happy.
Installation took multiple days when it should have take only take one. Had to call to get them to come out and finish work as they did not call to tell me that the next day meant the next week.
Only reasonable person that I worked with was the sales rep. Everyone else blamed others, made excuses and passed the buck.
