As good as I could have hoped for. Jim was punctual, professional and friendly. He diagnosed the issue, got the parts necessary and fixed the dog door. He did such a great job that I asked him to look at another issue that had gone unfixed for a long time. Jim was able to get that done too (replacing a lock on a screen door on the lanai). Total time for both projects was about 2 1/2 hours (which included the time it took for hi to go to Home Depot for some parts)

Jim encased a brick step we had in our sunken living room with wood. This step has extremely hard measurements and a lot of intricate details and Jim was able to cut the wood and remodel it beautifully. Jim was always on time and very polite. He followed through on all his appointments and had great communication with us throughout the entire process. I highly recommend Jim!

g why he is listedwas leaving for work 5 deck joists
The estimate reads:
Remove replace 40'x8' of floor decking.
remove and replace 4'x30' of wood ramp
remove and replace all top rail
remove 4'x12' wood walk
replace back stair treads 3
all fasteners to be Glv.nails
remove all trash
After I had accepted his estimate Mr. Costello informed me that, should unforseen damage be found there would be additional cost in labor and materials.
I requested that Mr Costello provide me with an accurate account of possible hidden damage prior to commencing the work. He said he was unable to do so.
Mr Costello provided me with an order for the materials and asked me to purchase them. He said the price of the materials and delivery was included in the estimate and would be subtracted from the estimate total. The sum quoted for materials was $901.37. When I called to pay for the materials, I was told by Home Depot that the price was $855.90, owing to a 4th of July sale. Mr Costello stated that the $45.47 price difference was his to pocket.
Mr Costello and his two assistants commenced work on the main deck. He reported damage to five deck joists which he reinforced with a section of board. they worked from 7.30am and left at 4.00pm. The following day they arrived for work at 7.00am. I was leaving for work and checked that he had my phone number. He requested that I leave the him access to the garage where the fuse box is located. I told him I would be back at 1.00 pm and he assured me that he would not leave the premises and the garage unsecured.
When I returned at 1.00 Mr Costello and his crew were gone with their equipment and the garage door left unlocked. I phoned his and was told that he needed to speak to me regarding the walk way. He arrived to do so an hour or two later. He stated that the wood of the walk way was deteriorated. I asked for an estimate for the repair but he refused and said he had more work planned and would not give me an estimate for the repair or the demolition. He arrived the following morning, demolished the walk way and rails on each side. He presented me with a demand for the full price of the original estimate and an additional $200 for materials and labor for the joists. Only 2/3 of the reconstruction was completed. He suggested that he would do me a favor and remove the unused materials which had been purchased for the reconstruction of the walk way. There would be no reimbursement for the price and I refused.
I joined Angie's List to find service providers who would work with me on my projects at a fair price. I had the strong suspicion that I was being milked of all the money Mr. Costello could squeeze out of me. He sneers at the mention of Angie's List. I find myself wondering why he is listed as a recommended provider.

Response from Jim Costello Carpentry Inc
"The member's review is accurate with the exception of, the work was 100% complete when she was billed, at the agree on price, I paid for all the materials. the Home Depot coast was deduced from my bid, Was not my my responsibility to secured her home. I call the number that she provide and left a massaged that I was leavening. The member was given a hard bid of $2,950.00 to including labor and materials.(see complaint for scope of work) Because of the possibly of unforeseen damage I added a addendum to the bid, $35.00 per man per hrs for that type of extra work. After removing about 4' of decking I found 5 floor joist that were rotten, I replace them at my coast NOT the addendum price. I had suggested, when I first looked at the work, that the walkway should be demo or totally rebuild, she rejected both ideals. When it became obvious that the walkway could not be re deck, because rotten joist's, she wanted me to give her a new estimate, I told her I didn't have time too go thru the biding process again but I would demo, remove the remaining 30' of walkway, install new steps without a back charge . The next day she had change her mind and wanted to install a new railing without steps. The work was completed on 7/6/13 I also allowed her to keep the extra materials,"

He came in. I didn't expecting him right away but he called and he said he was in the neighborhood and he asked if he could come and I said yes. He looked at everything and he was here the next day and did the work for me. The doors didn't fit anymore after I got my new carpeting so all he did was take the doors outside and trimmed them down and hang them for me again. Jim Costello Carpentry Inc was very professional. he was very neat and he cleaned up after himself. Everything was great. I think the price was very fair. I was very pleased that he was very punctual.
