We met with Terry early in March to discuss what was needed and the time frame it was needed by. Terry quickly responded with the specifics and let us know that the transom window would be custom and the door was standard...and there were three (3) of the standard doors in stock. Because it was in inventory she could deliver the order within the two week time-frame. We made the 50% deposit on March 17th believing the door would arrive prior to our visitors on April 2nd.
On March 29th, after hearing nothing more from Terry, I called to inquire about the installation. Terry stated she did not yet have the door and she would have to call me back. When I did not receive a call back after two days (which was now two weeks since the deposit was made, and two days before our guests arrived) I sent her an email. Terry stated she was still "waiting on the door" (that was in stock...right?) and still needed to build the transom window. Still no install date given.
After still hearing nothing from Terry by Monday, April 11th, I sent another email inquiring about the door installation and she responded they could deliver/install on Wednesday. If I hadn't sent the email, would I have heard from them?
The good news is the door installers came on time and did a nice job installing our new door. We are very pleased with the finished product.
However, we would have appreciated knowing that Terry couldn't actually commit on a delivery date since it evidently wasn't within her ability to do so.
We bought new front doors and glass inserts with colored accents. We love the style and the keyless lock. It is really convenient not to have keys when leaving the house. The installation was a snap. Good crew , clean, professional. The showroom has everything on display and we were shown pictures of other homes to help us decide on our choice. We love it and get many compliments. The fiberglass door was easy to paint and looks like real wood

Initially, I planned to comparison shop at several places, including the big box stores. In the end, I went with the Glass Door Store quote because of the following:
1) The Glass Door store has lots of stained glass patterns on hand to choose from. The big box stores have limited on hand stock so we were pretty sure that we would have had to select our pattern from a "picture" rather than actual glass. Since so much of choosing a replacement door is esthetics, that is "how is looks", we didn't want to choose from a picture.
2) Although the cost would probably have been less at a big box store, we felt that the quality of the material and installation workmanship might be less as well. I've purchased several doors from big box stores in the past and was not overly impressed by the quality of these doors. Terry, the owner of the Glass Door Store, spent quite a bit of time explaining to us why they used the materials they used and why it was worth spending a little more. Still, there wasn't any pressure to buy "the very best".
3) Terry's husband is the "installer". Big box stores do not install things themselves. They contract out. Contracted jobbers are usually paid a fixed fee so the only way for them to make more money is to do more jobs by doing them quicker. Cutting corners is one way of doing them quicker.
4) I checked out the Glass Door Store on Angie's list and didn't find any adverse information.
A major cost driver for these doors is the stained glass pattern you chose, Terry told us that we could save maybe $1000 if we just went with plain glass. But, then, we'd basically have the same door we were replacing. So we ordered the stained glass inserts we wanted, regardless of price.
Terry's husband first came out to verify measurements. A somewhat unexpected revelation was that the door and frame would be unfinished. They is, you will have to finish yourself or contract someone else to do it. An explanation for this was that during installation, there would be holes that would be drilled that had to be filled. Apparently, most choose to paint their door and frame. Initially, we wanted to "stain" rather than paint. Just be aware that there is extra work/cost involved to finish the door after it is installed whether you paint or stain. Our son purchased a fiberglass door, less the stained glass, at a big box store and it came "pre-finished". So, once the installation was done, the whole job was done.
The installation went well. Terry's husband and a helper spent about 3 hours removing and installing the door. Since he knew we were going to finish it ourselves, he gave me a number of tips to make things go more smoothly. They spent quite a bit of time "shimming" the door so that it fit correctly and so that "gaps" were even.
I collected all the materials - stain, brushes, filler, brush cleaner , etc, - to stain the door. But, I got cold feet. There were several different types of materials used in the door installation - fiberglass, of two different colors, bare wood, white primed wood, and the hole filler itself. Making all of these materials match in color seemed like too much work with an unpredictable outcome. Additionally, if you stain, you will have to varnish as well. Every couple of years, you will have to re-varnish. Who wants more home maintenance?
In the end, we decided to paint. I don't know what it would cost to have someone finish the door for us. If it was my business, I would have a "connection" with someone who could finish the door. That way, I would have confidence that the door would be finished correctly.
"[removed member name], Thank you so much for your business and thank you so much also for enabling others to feel comfortable with our products and services. Indeed quality and workmanship is of primary importance to our small family owned company."
This business is run very efficiently. We supplied a set of basic door/sidelight measurements (a detailed set of measuring instructions are provided to simplify this step). We then selected the decorative glass insert pattern (tons of choices with many of the most popular ones in the showroom). We then paid a downpayment to start the ball rolling (glass panels are then ordered). Install date was estimated to be within 3 weeks.
Our glass panels were actually received within a few days and installation was actually performed 10 days after we made our glass panel selection.
The installation went smoothly, the many years of experience was very obvious. Installation was also very clean as the installers vacuum up after themselves.
Our entranceway looks terrific and we would definitely recommend the Glass Door store based on our experience.
