Understand that this was not just a simple slap the singles on and go away job. It would need an experienced company. I went with this company because they had been doing roofs in Temple Terrace for many years and many of my neighbors know this family and the founder, Morris Swope. This company was not the most expensive estimate, nor the cheapest. The estimator, who was the founder and owner Morris Swope?s grandson, told me the roof could be done without replacing the skylights. After the job, the roof leaked right away. The company sent a repairman out who checked the roof. He told me, in front of witnesses, that when they did the work, they did not place any membrane around one of the skylights, which is why it leaked. The company sent a crew out to fix the repair and replace the wood. This roof has tongue and groove 2" x 6" that rotted in several areas and was very costly to replace. The roof continued to leak, now not just around the skylights but in several other areas. Morris Swope, who from what I understand is now retired and was probably semi retired when I met him, came out with his grandson to inspect the damage and said they would make good on the roof and all damages. From that point on my phone calls went unanswered and I never heard from him or his grandson again. His son Keith, who now runs the company, then sent me a letter saying that since I had not changed out the skylights he would not warranty the roof. This is not what the estimator told me, nor is there an exclusion anywhere in my contract voiding the warranty. All of this after they came out and said they would fix it. Dishonest people? You be the judge. My lawyer told me due to the small dollar amount, legal action was simply not financially sound, just fix the roof and move on. I contacted a lawyer? You bet, he is my brother in law. His advice at the time was sound, but in hindsight, I should of sued, filed a BBB complaint and contacted the local news station that specializes in consumer affairs. We are all busy with lives and working and companies take advantage of that fact. I simply did not have the time to fight this situation, and the installation cost was small. Since then, this roof has cost me much much more over the years than the first expenditure. This is a point all readers must consider when choosing a company. I have been battling to keep this roof from leaking in many spots, not just the skylights, since the original installation. I am now on Angie?s list looking for another company to tear the whole thing off and start new. List members beware, this is a company that does shoddy work and then does not stand behind it. You can come see the job here if you like.
