"[Member Name Removed] was a sub who worked for us and did not perform well and we let him go. Never painted for him. This is sour grapes!"
When they began work the owner told me that he was concerned about not taking off "too much paint". That they would not be too aggressive in taking the chipped paint off because of the problems it might cause. He said nothing of this when he gave me the estimate.
When I went by to see their progress I spoke with his subcontractor who was doing most of the painting. I told him of my concerns that there were places that were not caulked. He told me it was standard operating procedure for them to paint first and then caulk afterwards. It concerned me but there was little I can do.
They worked for the next several days to get the house painted. On the last day, his subcontractor called me 5 times during my workday starting at 8 o'clock in the morning to ask me to come by and give them a final inspection. When I went by the house to inspect, there was clearly one entire wall where they had just painted over chipped paint and several places that have not been caulked. When I called the owner about it, telling him that I was concerned that they just painted over problems, he got very defensive. I told him about other concerns and all he kept telling me was that they were going to go by the next day and fix it.
After he finished that next day he left a voicemail saying they had done all that they could do. They e-mailed me the invoice that night.
I got tired of fighting with them. He kept telling me how old the house was and I kept saying I just wanted him to do what he said he was going to do. I sent them the payment for their invoice and will fix the problems myself. The painting that was done right looks good. However, I needed a painting contractor who could handle the tougher problems of an older home.
"Owner expected restoration work, and I explained to him that we are not licensed to do that kind of painting. A house of this age is full of lead based paint and you would have to have a special classification to perform this kind of restoration. Owner hired me to paint the house not restore it."
