"Thank you so much for the great review, [Member Name Removed]! We are happy to hear that our technicians have been competent and that we have shown to be a reputable company. If there is any other services that you are in need of, please give us a call! Thanks again for the 5-star review!"
The technician has come to our house and after their review he said theydid not recommend to fix and suggested us to replace by a new unit. The man provided 2 quotes. As I was not home I decided to call and get the details - the manager that answered my call was categoric that the fix would be almost the cost of a new system as many parts were damaged and broken. I thought they were an specialist and told him that I could not do it now due to the cost but I would do when possible. He said to me that I had to pay for the service call 105 USD. I believe to charge is fine but I would charge if I know something and have expertise.
So I decided to call other company, they came - the look and told me they could fix and the cost would be with parts 500 USD. I decided to do and have my pool heated and working very well.
My conclusion is the following:
1)Hawkins know nothing... don't trust them. I felt ripped off and do not think 105 was worth of nothing.
2)I will always get 2-3 opinions going forward -
3)Dont trust completely the recommendations of the manufacture as they may consider sales as their point representation and not service quality.
"Mr. [Member Name Removed], We appreciate the feedback and will use it to improve the quality of our service. However we will disagree with the results given to you by the other company. Our factory trained technician went through proper protocol and found there was a missing fan blade and shaft for motor for the heat pump. The fan blade breaking off caused the capillaries to bend in two places and water was introduced into the refrigerant system. Fixing the fan blade and shaft motor are only temporary fixes for a much larger issue that will be recurring the more you use your heat pump. The breach in the refrigerant system is what deemed the unit unrepairable to our technician which is why we provided you with the options you were unsatisfied with. We have been in business since 1992 and have never made a living by ripping our customers off. The majority of our business is repeat and referrals by current customers and we have flourished by taking care of our customers and doing what is right. We hope that you find the fix you are looking for and if we can be of assistance moving forward please do not hesitate to call."
I told him to proceed and he immediately started the project.
He left to get supplies and a helper. He returned within an hour and completed the work in less than 3 hours.
They replaced my entire outdoor circuit from the main panel in my garage to my pool equipment site. They installed a new main panel breaker (and rearranged other breakers to a more logical order), installed conduit from my main panel, through my attic, out the side of my house and down to the new panel site. They ran commercial grade wires, removed my old subpanel, timer box and light transformer and replaced them all with one integrated pool panel.
They provided efficient and timely response, an accurate estimate, and quality work as promised. When complete the job appeared to be well done and looked highly professional. My pool panel electrical subsystem now provides the power I need while meeting code requirements.
My only complaint is they did not re-install a GFCI breaker for my outdoor kitchen, which runs from my pool subpanel. The tech said he could not re-install my old GFCI breaker because it was not compatible with the new panel (would not fit). He didn’t install a new compatible GFCI breaker because he didn’t have one on the truck. When asked if using a non-GFCI breaker met code he admitted it did not, but then he explained what I could do to bring it up to code. So I bought a GFCI breaker from Home Depot and installed it myself. Install was quick and easy (about 5 minutes) but it cost me about $40.
After doing such a great job, I found it somewhat disappointing Hawkins left me with that issue to solve. I suspect if I had pressed him he would have come back later to install the GFCI. In his defense, that detail had not been specifically discussed before I agreed to the work, so he may not have felt obligated to re-install a GFCI.
Bottom-line, I was happy with the response and overall professionalism of Hawkins and would use them again for electrical work. But I will be very specific about what I expect as a finished project.
6/27/14 UPDATE
Just wanted to update my review based on a call I had with Hawkins and their response to my review. I do appreciate you reaching out and attempting to fix rectify the situation.
On the firmware. In July or August of last year, you guys replaced the Easy Touch board because the original board went bad. You replaced it with a board that was on the truck and it was a lower rev level than required to work with the Intellichem. While Pentair was here, they updated the firmware and got it all working.
Most recently when you were here to replace the breaker, the tech left wanting to replace the Easy Touch board (again) and a motor control board because the motor was running when the Easy Touch was off. All they had to do is go into the schedule to see that it was setup for the in-floor cleaning system to run, which bypasses the heater(s), and leaves the Intellichem and Intellichlor off. There was nothing wrong with the system and this would have been a waste of both of our time and Pentairs' money.
I do agree that I was not fair to you on the professionalism portion of the review and I have adjusted it, because even with all of the issues you guys came across here, you did try to fix the problem and were professional. Also, I feel that if I had a basic pool with limited features, you guys would be just fine. Again, I do thank you for trying, but it has been a constant struggle for a year now.
"To respond to Mr. [member name removed] complaint, our technicians at Hawkins Service Company are highly trained in the Pentair products and repair of such equipment. We are required to attend classes that Pentair has each year that are designed to inform us of new and existing products and any repairs problem that we may experience in the field. We have been a premier Pentair warranty station for nearly 20 years and highly regarded in our industry as a reliable and honest company to deal with. I took the time to contact my Pentair representative and the manufacturers head of pool automation about the comment regarding us installing firmware versions which were incompatible for his pool automation system. Both stated that firmware incompatibility has not been an issue and to their knowledge it has never been an issue at this customer's system. The Pentair supplied serial adapter that allows the home owners home automation system to communicate with his pool automation has been swapped twice due to failures or inconsistencies pointed out by the customer. But again, no mention of incompatibility has ever been mentioned to us by the customer or the manufacturer Pentair. I have had several conversations with the customer regarding his Intellichem system in which we have replaced two sensor probes that had failed as well as the actual chem pump for the system and eventually we swapped out the entire system for the builder. Each time the parts were supplied by the manufacturer for these are not normal stocked items so there was a delay on the repair each time due to waiting on parts to arrive. The customer indeed has experienced a breaker tripping on his pump, however each time we have been out the pump is working and there are no normal signs of pump failure. We changed out the GFCI breaker on these occasions in case it is an intermittent problem in which happens when a technician is not there. A GFCI breaker monitors the amount of current flowing from hot to neutral. If there is any imbalance, it trips the circuit. It is able to sense a mismatch as small as 4 or 5 milliamps, and it can react as quickly as one-thirtieth of a second causing the breaker to trip. This is a safety feature added to swimming pool pumps recently that is now mandated by code requirements. Unfortunately, it is common for these breakers to trip due to power outages or surges which are quite frequent due to Florida's weather patterns. We are willing to provide our professional service to Mr. Bull for any and all of his issues with the equipment, but he has chosen to deal with Pentair direct. The times we have been at his home, he was pleasant on the phone with us and forthcoming with the issues at hand and we have addressed the issues each time we have been on his property. It is only later we find out he has contacted Pentair or the builder and stated he was not happy with our service. We at Hawkins Service Company pride ourselves on our knowledge of products but more so on our customer service. We did reach out to the customer and offered for us to come out with the manufacturer to hopefully instill confidence to him that we indeed are factory trained and qualified and who better to show that with would be the manufacturer, but he declined."
