60My 2007 Rheem air conditioner started icing up on a Saturday. We noticed the difference as soon as we woke up. The temperature was a few degrees off and the sound of the blower/fan was different. I located a different well-rated HVAC company on Angie's list. They sent a tech that day, and originally diagnosed a freon problem. He guessed where it might be leaking, one of which ended up being the culprit. But he wasn't certain. I asked him to top it off an then let's see what happens. He wasn't able to top off the freon because it wan't low. Rather the valve that controls the flow of the freon (TXV) was stuck shut due to a loss of the gas that activates the valve. At first he quoted me nearly $1500, which was about $500 for the part and installation, and then the rest was draining the existing freon, and filling it with new freon at about $125 per lb. On Monday their office called and said they coudl recycle the existing freon and it would only be $760. I called out two more companies who were referrals from people I knew. One was a dud, but Abdair was a keeper. He immediately diagnosed the valve issue and warned me it was going to be expensive. He tactfully explained that my unit was a package unit, so the entire unit was outside, thus the freon could not be diverted to the other part of the system, rather it had to be removed. He indicated that it was too easy to contaminate freon, and that the best practice was to replace it. He quoted me $700 on the spot, with new freon included (for which he only charged about $50/lb). He also told me that the supplier did not have it in stock, but he would have it in two days. I was assured that it was a factory part, OEM, not a generic replacement. That Friday, he showed up as promised and had it repaired in about two hours. He showed me what he had done, and had gauges on it to demonstrate the pounds of pressure. The rest of the day the temperature inside kept dropping until it hit my desired temperature. I wrote him a check and he emailed me the receipt. This is a small business owner who is adept and takes pride in his work. He doesn't have a fleet of trucks with his name on it, but he is the real deal. Thanks Abdair Gallardo!
