We hired Skip Sheffield to build our new home in 2001 based on the recommendation of the contractor who built our last home but was no longer doing residential construction. During the design phase, Skip reviewed the work of our residential designer and suggested both design and money-saving improvements that were included in the final plans.
After receiving a detailed estimate, we decided to proceed with a cost-plus contract instead of a fixed price option. This worked to our advantage, since the final construction cost was almost exactly on budget despite design changes that we requested during construction. Skip effectively made cost savings on other parts of the project that offset our additions to the design. Skip provided detailed monthly accountings throughout the construction process. The project was completed on-time and (but for our changes) under-budget.
In 2009, we hired Skip to build an addition to our house and to expand the size of a stand-alone workshop. We again used a cost-plus contract and had an aggressive time schedule. This work was completed on-time and on-budget.
The quality of Skip's work is outstanding. Over the past 12 years, whenever we have had a maintenance issue (e.g. after 11 years, a roof leak where squirrels had chewed around a roof vent), Skip has either had his staff fix the problem or has referred us to a competent specialist.
We have been extremely pleased with our relationship with Sheffield Construction, and would recommend them to anyone who wants professional, custom work at a fair price.
Mike went above and beyond to help us find economies or savings on our project. He searched the Internet to find what we wanted / needed for something, often finding a better price than we could get locally. By doing this we were able to add a few things that had been cut from our project back in and also add some enhancements to our original plans and still come in very close to our original budget.
During the entire construction process, the work site was maintained in a very clean and orderly manner, there was never any trash or debris lying about.. I felt that I could drop by and see what was happening or bring friends by to see things anytime.
As we moved in and got settled in our house, the usual small things cropped up that needed to be addressed. Skip was very prompt in addressing them or arranging for a subcontractor to address any issues such as paint touch up, minor electrical hiccups, etc.
I spent almost every day on the job site. Skip and the superintendent, Jerry Davis, were always professional and helpful. It was a great job from start to finish. I'd love to do it again.
Thank you Skip - you are one of a kind and so appreciated for your beautiful work!
"The Owner delivered a home plan for pricing with a budget we felt was unrealistic. We did not receive any deposit to create an estimate as claimed. We did not provide a detailed estimate. 2010 was a very busy year for us. We simply did not have time to devote to a project with an unrealistic budget.Last contact with this Owner was in 2010. Odd that such a review would turn up in 2013."
