Mr. Payne provided outstanding customer service at a very fair price and in a timely manner. He was very responsive, polite and professional. We felt he really had our best interests at heart. It's been a week since the repair was done and the air handler and A/C appear to be working just fine. We will defintely use Mr. Payne in the future, even if it is just for seasonal HVAC checkups/tuneups (hopefully, our repaired system will last many more years).
Our A/C (actually a heat pump) stopped cooling so we called the company with which we had an annual service contract (one of the big, well-known/advertised HVAC companies in Tallahassee). They sent a tech out the following morning, who determined we had a refrigerant leak, and then added 5 lbs of freon (cost $334). He then said we needed to have a leak test done to determine the location of the leak. That required another service visit where it was determined that the evaporator coil in the air handler was rusted and leaking in several spots (cost $118). When we asked what it would cost to repair, we were told $1,800-$2,400 (with no suggestion to check the warranty). We were skillfully encouraged to replace the entire system because "it was 6 years old and freon is no longer being manufactured and is skyrocketing in price." A salesperson was promptly dispatched to our house, who recommended higher efficiency systems starting at $8,500 and up to $12,000. After considering it overnight, we decided to just attempt to repair the evaporator coil. We searched for a smaller Ruud-authorized independent contractor. We contacted two companies and Mr. Payne's company offered the better price.
