My agreement with the company was to do the job for labor plus materials. The rep estimated that it would take 2 days to do the job, at $90/hr, though there is a trip charge every time they come, about $25(?). Fair enough, no problem. They came the 2nd day, knowing it would only be for 2 hrs, yet I still was charged the trip fee. Seemed kind of nickel and amp; dime-ish, but no problem. So the job was done in 3 partial days, which is good.
When I got the bill, I was surprised that the charge for the materials was $1100. This seemed very high to me, as these materiasl consisted only of the wiring, conduit pipe, and junction boxes from the generators to the breaker box. There was no detail for the materials on the invoice, just a lump sum. It really seemed like a lot of money for the materials that I could see. I called the company and politely asked for a detail of the materials, and they immediately were very defensive and argumentative about providing the detail. Rather than fight about it, I just agreed to pay.
Finally, after installation I had to get the propane gas hooked up before they could test the generators. They pre-billed me for coming back to test the generators at $330. It actually took exactly 1 hour for the guys to start up and test the generators, and this included some time figuring out how to do it as they had not experienced this newer type of generator. The more typical generator that they were used to would have taken less than one hour. There were no materials used, so it should have only been about $120 for the time based upon our original agreement.
So I feel like I was overcharged about $200 for the startup, and will always wonder what the materials really should have cost, and why they were so hesitant to provide any detail. Maybe I underestimate the cost of wiring and conduit, I have sent the full payment to the company, despite my questions about billing.
They arrived on time and did this job efficiently. I would not hesitate to call on them again.
Previously, they'd installed a circuit at my house during a tankless water heater installation, and they were just as efficient during that project.
"Pool light was provided by homeowner and we we told to terminate it with 120 volt power. We installed per customers instructions and it burned the $1000 12 volt pool light up. The customer did not furnish any paper work with the fixture nor did they provide a low voltage transformer which comes standard with these type fixtures. The small claims court ruled in their favor because we have deeper pockets and it was their word against ours. We have been doing this for 32 years and are very good at what we do. We always try and make every customer happy and provide a quality service, this communication was unfortunate for both parties involved."
