When the cars were on warranty, I used the local Subaru dealer's service center. They charged as much, but overall came across as less knowledgeable. The service manager turned over several times, and one of them pushed work I felt was unnecessary or premature. When the cars came off warranty I switched to Import Authority, and have been happy ever since.
One of the great things about them is the friendly, family-like atmosphere, both between the people who work there and toward customers. It's a bit like the show "Cheers", where the them song describes the bar as "where everybody knows your name".
In this most recent case, I had been living with an AC problem for years, which caused the AC not to come on some times when I started the car. Generally I would come on if I shut off the engine and restarted. The Import Authority folks said it would be costly to diagnose, and might involve replacement of the electronic control module and/or compressor. They recommended that I postpone work on this until the problem got worse, and until it happened frequently enough that they could reproduce it. It finally reached that point, so I took it in. They kept it several days, and did a lot of diagnostic work. They did not need to replace the ECM or the compressor. It turned out to be a problem with a rotational speed sensor on the AC compressor. Most of the cost was for their time. The problem is really fixed.
I'm from out of town, and when my son said he suspected a head gasket problem with my '09 Nissan Versa because coolant was mixing with the oil, I checked Angieslist as well as recommendations from friend and brought the car to IA. Sure enough, it was the head gasket. And the cylinder. And the thermostat. One of those times when the problem emerges in stages, as layers are peeled back.
Fortunately, I had a comprehensive extended warranty (worth every penny). Still, you need time and an advocate to process it-- Warren is now my hero. He spent countless hours describing and documenting the problem with my company, and ensured that every step of the way the work was done with skill and efficiency. At the front desk, Chip and Clinton were always professional and courteous even under pressure as the setbacks kept coming.
Years ago, I had had a horrendous experience with a previous mechanic (that car is kaput, but I'm still paying for it), so I was understandably worried about getting ripped off. I am happy to report that my faith in humanity is completely restored, thanks to Import Authority. Those guys are fantastic.
I had used them before, and they have always done good work for the money: neither too high nor too low.
They have had factory trained mechanics from the Honda dealership in the past (not sure about now).
