The stain application was poor. They used an outdoor furniture stain ($7.00 per gallon) instead of a deck stain ($25 plus per gallon). They stained anything touching the deck including vines. Stain was splattered everywhere. There were at least a dozen places that were completely missed. When confronted, they agreed to remove the stain and use an appropriate deck stain. However they would only remove the stain from the floor because stripping the railings would be too difficult. Also I would need to rent them a sander because they did not have one. Since the railings were too difficult to strip, I asked them to replace the railings at my expense. They said no, too much work due to code. The new wood was damaged when they attempted to strip the deck. They would not replace any of the damaged wood. During this process I learned that Canopy Roads did not have workman's comp insurance at the time and that they could not replace the railings because they were unable to pull a permit. I was unable to file a claim against their insurance company because they were not covered. Lesson learned. Be sure to check their insurance and license. In the end, I hired another company to come in and strip and stain the deck. The new company stated that the damaged wood should have been replaced. Note, I also had to hire someone to come in and redo additional work done inside my home by this company.
