The company owner, Mr. John Duren, has been to our home on several occasions over the past 10 years to inspect our roof at the request of insurance companies, etc. He is always very prompt and courteous.
Duren was my first call after the hail storm on 4/27/2015; I have bids from several local roofing companies; my husband & I are debating going with a metal roof this time, so we have not selected a roofing contractor yet.
The roofer they contracted with had 2 men remove the old roof and were expected to replace the damaged wood which included several 4 x 12 inch beams. After the 2 men arrived and began the work, my wife and I went to lunch and returned 45 minutes later as the men were just finishing up. I was shocked that they had supposedly done all the work involved in an hour. When I questioned them about replacing the damaged beams they said they had. I was a former General Contractor and estimated it would take about a day and a half to do the job. I asked them where the old wood was and they said it was already removed by truck. I knew they were lying and the wood could not be replaced in that short amount of time. I contacted the company and asked for a representative to see me.
One did show up and later that day and I told him what happened. He told me they had replaced the ashalt, nailed new 2x4's to the old wood and that was all they would do. I told them I would not pay for the work since I knew it was not done correctly. You can't nail untreated wood to rotted wood and expect it to last or survive a hurricane. It also invites termites. This representative threatened me and told me "to leave or else." I stood there and demanded to know "or else what? This is my house." I called Bristol Management and the roofer and demanded a meeting.
Later that afternoon, another representative from the company, a represenatitive of Bristol Management and a City of Jupiter Building Inspector came and inspected the work. When I demanded that the new roofing paper be removed for a thurough inspection, the inspector looked at the damaged wood and how they had "repaired" it and said, "Oh my God!" They had nailed the 2x4's to rotten wood and then tried to cover up the work before we could see it. They had even used my 2 x 4's that I had to hold down a tarp.
I fired the first company and contacted Duran. They explained that with the damaged wood, they could not give me an exact price but it would be around $1800 plus a few more for new permits and repairs. It took an additional two weeks but eventually 2 men arrive and they did a great job in removing all of the rotted wood and replaced it with new wood then closed it up before putting a new asphalt roof on top. The work they performed was excellent. It took 2 men 1 1/2 days to do all the work.
My problem came with the bill. It was around $3800. They had billed me for 40 man hours. The time the 2 men spent on my job was 24 man hours. I contacted the company and they sent me the time cards of the workers. The time cards show that I was being charged for travel time to and from their facilities in Stuart to Jupiter where I lived and also the time it took them to clean their trucks each night. I was also charged an additional 8 hours for work they did not do. After they told me that it was common to charge for travel time and cleaning their trucks, I pointed out that they had also charged me for an additional 8 hours. They appologized for the extra 8 hours and took that off the price, but still charged me for the travel and cleaning time. The result was that I paid the bill but will not use them again since I feel they had charged me for items that were not explained to me in advance. If they had explained it, I may have looked for another company that would not charge travel and clean up time.
